Maria Sharapova beats Victoria Azarenka on Stuttgart clay

Sunday was a day at Stuttgart's red clay when the World Numbers One and Two clashed in a bid to wear the Stuttgart crown. Many thought it to be be a hard contested match, but perhaps World Number One Victoria Azarenka wasn't in quite a mood for that due to a wrist injury.

And this allowed the World Number Two Russian Maria Sharapove to take advantage of Azarenka's injury and easily ousted her 6-1, 6-4.

Sharapova's win Suday avenges her earlier two defeats at the hands of Azarenka in the Australian Open and the Indian Wells earlier this year.

A jubilant Sharapova was mindful of Azarenka's injury and duly admired her contest:
"Azarenka was injured today, maybe she could not perform well but I am happy to be the champion here this year."
"I was going to use this event as a warm-up (to the French Open) so I did not come much earlier. Maybe I should continue doing it like that."
