WGC-Cadillac Championship: Watch Live Free Streaming | 7 March 2013

This week the PGA Tour heads in two different directions. While a full field will tackle the Trump International Golf Club in Puerto Rico, top 50 golfers of the world march onto the TPC Blue Monster Course at Doral for the season's second WGC event.

McIlroy tees off on the 16th hole during a practice round on Doral's Blue Monster course

Doral’s Blue Monster is a course set up for McIlroy to shine on – he finished third at this event last year – but it is likely that this week will come too soon for the world No 1 to have worked out the kinks in his swing he says are the real cause of his poor form.

Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Matt Kuchar – all winners already this year – as well the likes of Luke Donald, Charl Schwartzel and Justin Rose, plus all last year’s major winners, tee it up this week.

Watch the matches as these are played for free Thursday, 7th March at 19:00 GMT.

McIlroy welcomes proposed putting rule change

World number one Rory McIlroy has welcomed the proposed ban on "anchored" putting, announced on Wednesday by golf's global governing bodies.

McIlroy's comments echoed those that 14-time major champion Tiger Woods has made all year - that an anchored putter does not produce a true golf stroke, and can ameliorate the effect of nerves which should be part competition.

"Fully agree with the anchoring ban," the Northern Ireland golfer said on Twitter after the Royal & Ancient and US Golf Association jointly announced they proposed to ban golfers from anchoring putters to their bodies to create a pendulum-type stroke from 2016.

-->

"Better image for the game of golf, skill and nerves are all part of the game. Level playing field in '16" McIlroy tweeted.

Is McIlroy playing like Woods?

Rory McIlroy's rivals were in awe of his two-shot victory at the DP World Tour Championship and compared the world number one's form to the dominance 14-times major winner Tiger Woods displayed in his prime.

The Northern Irishman landed his fifth title of the year on Sunday, countering a course-record 62 by Ryder Cup team mate Justin Rose with a stunning sequence of five straight birdies at the conclusion of the final European Tour event of the season in Dubai.

Luke Donald, who played alongside McIlroy in the last round at the Greg Norman-designed Earth course, said the 23-year-old's performance proved he was the world's outstanding golfer.

-->

"He showed a lot of grit and determination," the second-ranked Donald told reporters. "It capped off an amazing year for him.

British Open: Can Tiger Woods regain top spot?

Can Tiger Woods regain top spot at British Open? [photo: Pubpepper]
What are the chances of Tiger Woods regaining the top spot he once enjoyed? Can Tiger Woods again be the world’s top golfer with a victory at this week’s British Open, specially after nearly three years of dishonour – a stunning collapse of status, popularity and earning power; a turn as a tabloid luminary; a stint in rehabilitation; a glassy-eyed public apology; leg operations; a divorce; a swing change; and the firing of his coach and his caddie?

Well Montreal Gazette's Bill Pennington thinks so.

Pennington is of the view that despite falling out of the top 50 in the world rankings late last year, Woods has won three PGA Tour events in 2012 and swiftly put himself in sight of the top spot, a position he held for 281 successive weeks from 2005 to 2010. To become the world’s new No. 1, Woods would have to win this week – ending a victory drought in major championships that dates to June 2008 – and the current No. 1, Luke Donald, would have to finish lower than a tie for third.

Sun shines on British Open

The rain relented and the sun finally shone on Royal Lytham & St. Annes on Wednesday, boosting hopes of an uninterrupted British Open.

However, there's standing water in a half dozen of the 206 bunkers and some greens are softer than expected on the eve of the tournament.

Despite one of Britain's worst summers, organizers said Lytham "is in pretty good shape going forward," especially with forecasters predicting good weather over the weekend.

Molinari sets course record

Italy's Francesco Molinari established a new course record of 10-under par 62 to lead by two shots after the opening day of the Scottish Open on Thursday.

Molinari, 29, birdied five holes in a row from his fifth and then four in succession from his 12th in a bogey-free display that is two strokes fewer than the previous low set in the event a year ago.

The London-based Italian's round comes also just four days after he shot a final round 64 to grab second place in the French Open.

Pak begins Women's Open in style

On Se Ri Pak's list of favorite places in the world, Blackwolf Run ranks somewhere near the top.
She won the 1998 U.S. Women's Open here and considers it the most important victory of her hall of fame career. She tells people she was "born on July 6, 1998, at Blackwolf Run."
Pak has become close with Herbert V. Kohler Jr., the president and CEO of the Kohler Co. This week, she's wearing the company's logo on her collar - more a symbolic gesture of her affinity for Kohler than a business deal.
Kohler greeted Pak on the first tee Thursday for the opening round of the 67th U.S. Women's Open and returned to the course later in the day to watch her finish.

Johnson back on top with win at St. Jude

Dustin Johnson won the St. Jude Classic on Sunday in his second event after a back injury cost him nearly three months away from the PGA Tour, shooting a four-under 66 that held off John Merrick (68) by a stroke.

"Well, it feels really good, especially having so much time off," Johnson said.

Johnson pulled a muscle in his lower right back in early March lifting a Jet Ski at his home, and rest was the biggest part of his prescription for healing. He didn't return to the tour until last week at the Memorial, where he tied for 19th.

McIlroy resumes play and quest for number one at Quail Hollow

THE YO-YOING atop the world rankings, with Luke Donald regaining the top spot from Rory McIlroy, is adding spice of a sort to the mix.

For McIlroy, though, the quest for more tour wins – with the rankings looking after themselves – is the main influencing factor and the Ulsterman, who celebrates his 23rd birthday tomorrow, resumes play after a two-week break in the Wells Fargo championship at Quail Hollow.

McIlroy has spent the past fortnight away from serious golf with social engagements that ranged from watching girlfriend Caroline Wozniacki play tennis in Monte Carolo, attending horse racing at Newbury and seeing Ulster’s rugby team in action. Now, it’s a case of getting back to serious business in returning to a tournament where he made a breakthrough US Tour win in 2010.
