World no.1 and the defending champion Swiss Roger Federer plays his 9th Basel final and eyeing a sixth title when he meets world no.8 Argentinian Juan Martin Del Potro at Basel Sunday today. Federer has won the Basel title from 2006-2008 and 2010-2011.
Roger Federer playing against del Potro to defend his Basel title for the sixth time
Roger Federer moved into the final after beating French wild card Paul-Henri Mathieu in the Swiss indoor tennis tournament. Victory for Federer saw him draw level with John McEnroe’s tally of 875 match wins, the fourth-best total in the Open Era. And if he wins on Sunday, his 77th tour-level title, he will also equal McEnroe's career haul.
Federer has played against Del Potro 15 times before since they first at Wimbledon 2006 and Del Potro has only been able to win two matches at US Open 2009 and London 2009. Del Potro, who claimed his third title of the year in Vienna last week, also lost to Federer in the quarterfinals of the Australian and French Opens, the Rotterdam final, the Indian Wells quarterfinal and the Dubai semifinals.
Federer has lost only twice in his last ten matches, against Berdych at US Open and Murray at Shanghai.Del Potro too has lost two of his matches against Djokovic at Cincinnati and US Open earlier this year.
Obviously Federer despite being seven years older to Del Potro is favourite for the championship.
So let us watch the second semi final which is scheduled for Sunday, 28 October 2012 at 13:00 GMT.
