There hasn't been a major set back for the top seeded players so far. But Monday was a bad day for the seventh ranked Roger Federer, the 17 times Grand Slam winners.

Call it interupptions from mother Nature and the heavy downpour, which even when gone had darks clouds looming over the Flushing Meadows and Roeger Federer. This is the first time since 2002 that Federer has gone an entire campaign without reaching a Grand Slam final.

Federer lost to 19th seeded Tommy Robredo 7-6 (3), 6-3, 6-4. And do not call age to do something with Federer as Robredo is just one year younger to the 'aging' Swiss. The 32-year-old Swiss committed 43 unforced errors and finished 2-of-16 on break-point chances.

In another important match of the day, world no.2 Rafael Nadal battled back from an opening-set loss to No. 22 seed Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-7 (4), 6-4, 6-3, 6-1 to advance to the quarterfinals. Nadal's fellow countryman Fourth-seeded David Ferrer slogged through a four-set war versus Janko Tipsarevic 7-6 (2), 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (3).

8th seeded Richard Gasquet beat 10th seeded Milos Raonic in a tough five set match 6-7 (4), 7-6 (4), 2-6, 7-6 (9), 7-5 to qualify for the quarters.
