On Day 2, many left over top seeded players like Roger Federer, Andy Murray, Maria Sharapova and defending champion Azarenka are going to contest for the move over to the second round.
The thrill comes when world no.1 and 2009 Australian title holder Rafael Nadal confronts 52nd ranked Australian Bernard Tomic - six years younger to him, at the Rod Lver Arena Tuuesday morning.
The temperature is already rising before the match as Bernard Tomic is vowing to take it to Rafael Nadal in their first-round Australian Open blockbuster.
21-year-old Tomic says he'll need to be at the very top of his game to challenge the 13-times grand slam champion, almost certainly under the bright lights of Rod Laver Arena on Tuesday night.
This is the second time that both players are facing each other. They last met at Melbourne in 2011 when Nadal beat Tomic in the third round of the Australian Open 2011 6-2 7-5 6-3. And this time they meet right in the first round.
Nadal is eyeing the Australian title this year and seems very confident, though he has lost twive in his last ten matches. On the other hand, Tomic has lost four matches out of ten - the last being at ATP Sydney final recenly at the hands of Del Potro.
Nadal has some reservations about his face-up with Tomic.
"It's not the best start, I know, to a grand slam," Nadal said at Melbourne Park today. Playing against a player who is local and who is young, who played great in the past here, and who is playing well. He's in the final of Sydney. It's a tough start. I just need to be ready and practice with great tactics every day. Try to do the right things in every moment to arrive in the first round being competitive. That's the only way."The first round match between Nadal and Tomic is scheduled for 14 January 2014 at 08:00 GMT at Rod Laver Arena
