Lionel Andrés Messi, who hails from Argentina and plays for the leading club Barcelona broke many records this year as weh at Movin' Sports have been monitoring and writing about earlier.
He first broke the record of Pelé, who scored 75 goals in 1958 and Messi overtook him. Then it was the world record made by German Mueller of 85 goals in a calendar year made in 1972 - Messi has scored 91.

If he is honoured tonight, he will break the world record of three-time winners Zinedine Zidane and Ronaldo of Brazil and even of himself. For tonight's award giving ceremony Messi is certainly is the most favourite to win the FIFA Ballon d'Or prize ahead of club teammate Andres Iniesta and his great rival Cristiano Ronaldo of Real Madrid, who complete the three-man shortlist in Zurich.
Although Pelé and Maradona are the big names in the world of football, the emergence of Messi may make him one of the living legends ever.
The FIFA Annual Awards Gala - Ballon d'Or is scheduled for Monday, 7 January at 18:00 GMT at Zurich, Switzerland.
