Tsvetana Pironkova was a surprise winner of the Sydney International title in the lead-up to Melbourne Park.
Stosur moved to the second round beating Klara Zakopalova 6-3 6-4, while Pironkova beat S. Soler-Espinosa 6-3 6-2 to move to the second round. The first qualifier in three years to win a WTA Tour title, it was the 26-year-old's maiden WTA tour title.
This is the fourth encounter between the two players today with Stosur having won all three matches - the last being at Sofia in 2013 when she beat the Bulgarian in the robin round 6-1, 6-4.
The second round match between Samantha Stosur - Tsvetana Pironkova is scheduled for 15 January 2014 at 08:00 GMT at Rod Laver Arena.
