The first match of Thursday morning at WTA Madrid is being played today between the World Number two Russian Maria Sharapova meets 23rd ranked Czech Lucie Safarova.

Both have met only once in their career at the same venue in WTA Madrid 2010, which the Czech won 6-4, 6-3. But that was two years ago.
As for the form of the players, Lucie Safarova has lost three of her last ten matches, the last being at WTA Stuttgart at the hands of Chinese N Li 7-6(4) 6-4. On the other hand the Russian has won nine out of ten matches. She lost to A. Radwanska 7-5 6-4 in Miami earlir this year.
