Top 10 winners of Venus Rosewater Dish | Wimbledon Ladies' Single Title

Wimbledon Tennis championship was first played in 1877 and is since then become a premiere tennis tournament and Grand Slam. It is played on green green grass of London every year starting last week of June and terminating in first week of July.

The Ladies' single title was added to the championship in 1884 and British Maud Watson became the first Wimbledon Champion, who beat British Lillian Watson 6-8 6-3, 6-3. 

May Sutton Bundy became the first non-British who beat British Dorothea Douglass Lambert Chambers 6-3, 6-4 to hold the Venus Rosewater Dish.

From 1884 to 1967, the ladies single event was known as the Armature Era, which in 1968 became the Open Era that continues till date.

Many big names have surfaced since 1884 who became the top tennis players and had the honour of holding multiple championship titiles. Herein under are 10 top players who have won the ladies singles titile more than the others.

Martina Navratilova  held the Venus Rosewater Dish for record NINE times
American Martina Navratilova tops the list for having won the ladies singles title for record NINE times - a record that remains unbeaten since she last won the wimbledon title in 1990. She held the title in years 1978, 1979, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1985, 1986, 1987 and 1990. In1978, Martina beat felleow American Chris Evert to win her first Wimbledon title.

American Helen Wills Moody won the title EIGHT times
American Helen Wills Moody of the Amateur era was the second player who held the title for EIGHT times. She first won the title in 1927, and held it for the years 1927, 1928, 1929, 1930, 1932, 1933, 1935 and 1938.

British Chambers won Wimbledon title SEVEN times
British Dorothea Douglass Lambert Chambers of the Amateur Era held the title for SEVEN times in years 1903, 1904, 1906, 1910, 1911, 1913 and 1914. She was beaten by the first non-British player in 1905 at the hands of American May Sutton Bundy 6-3, 6-4.

German Stefi Graf held the Venus rosewater Dish SEVEN times
German Steffi Graf of Open Era was the fourth down the list who held the title SEVEN times too, like the British Dorothea Douglass Lambert Chambers. She held the title in years 1988, 1989, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1995 and 1996. Stefi beat American Martina Navratilova 5–7, 6–2, 6–1 in 1988 to win her first Wimbledon title.  Stefi could not qualify for 1997 finals.

British Bingley won the title SIX times
British Blanche Bingley held the title for SIX times in years 1886, 1889, 1894, 1897, 1899, 1900 of the Amateur Era. Miss Blanche beat British Maud Watson in 1886 to win her first title. She last won the title in 1900 when she beat Charlotte Cooper Sterry. Sterry beat Blanche the next year to end Blanche's dominance.


American Billie Jean King won the Wimbledon title SIX times
American Billie Jean King became the sixth player to hold SIX titles - two of Amateur Era and four of Open Era. She held the titles in years 1966, 1967, 1968, 1972, 1973, 1975. Billie beat the defending champion Brazilian Maria Bueno 6–3, 3–6, 6–1. Billie held the Venus rosewater Dish for the last time in 1975 when she beat Australian Evonne Goolagong Cawley 6–0, 6–1. 

French Suzanne Lenglen also won Wimbledon title for SIX time
Suzanne Lenglen of France also held the title for SIX times - all during the Amateur Era in years 1919, 1920, 1921, 1922, 1923, 1925.

British Cooper Sterry held Wimbledon title for Five times
British Charlotte Cooper Sterry of the Amateur Era held the title for FIVE times in years 1895, 1896, 1898, 1901, 1908. She last beat Blanche Bingley Hillyard, who occupies the 5th place in the record holders list.
British Lottie Dod  - the last of the Amateur era to hold the Wimbledon title for five times
British Lottie Dod of the Amateur Era held the title FIVE teimes in years 1887, 1888, 1891, 1892, 1893.

The last tenth player is American Venus William who held the Venus Rosewater Dish for FIVE times in years 2000, 2001, 2005, 2007, 2008. Venus beat fellow defending champion American Lindsay Davenport 6–3, 7–6(7–3) to win her first Wimbledon title in year 2000. In years 2001 and 2001, she lost the title to her sister Serena Williams. She regained the title in 2005 beating again Lindsay Davenport. She last won the Wimbledon title in 2008 beating sister Serena Williams, who clinched the title from Venus the following years. Serena held the title Four times.

Serena is playing Wimbledon this year too and is aspiring to hold the Venus Rosewater Dish for the fifth time as did her sister Venus in 2005 - and she has done it [updated 7 July 2012]:

Serena Williams playing against Polish Radwanska beat her 6-1, 5-7, 6-2 to win the Wimbledon title for 2012 for the fifth time and after being without it since 2010 when she last won it.
