Not taking any chances, Lionel Messi did not stop equaling Mueller's record of 85 in a calendar year, and ended the year 2012 with record 88 goals.
The Barcelona talisman increased his record tally of goals scored in a calendar year to 88 after netting twice last night against Cordoba in the first leg of the Copa Del Rey tie.
Earlier Messi broke Pelé’s record of 75 goals set in 1958 and Mueller's record of 75 goals set in 1972.
Messi now still has two games remaining in 2012 to further extend his record tally.
