Breathtaking Inauguration of Sochi Winter Olympics - Pictorial Coverage

The Sochi Winter Olympic got going with much thunderous fanfare, fireworks and innovative display of Russian art with pride and applause from the audience who saw the ceremony live. 

Herein under are some of the highlights of the opening ceremony - something that will be remembered for a long time.
Welcome to Sochi! Fireworks explode over the Fisht Olympic stadium after the ceremony, which first got under way at exactly 4.14pm GMT 
 
Russian tennis star and Grand Slam champion Maria Sharapova was handed the honour of carrying the torch into the stadium - Sharapova was born in the Black Sea resort of Sochi
