The 2014 Winter Olympics, officially the XXII Olympic Winter Games, or the 22nd Winter Olympics, is a major international multi-sport event being held in Sochi, Russia, scheduled for 7–23 February 2014. The opening ceremony was held on 6 February in the Fisht stadium on the Black Sea in Sochi.
Pakistan is represented by one skier, Mohammad Karim - from a village near Naltar in Gilgit Baltistan, who carried the Pakistan flag today in Russia.
“It’s a great opportunity for me as I have always dreamed of becoming an Olympian,” Karim told the press reporters. “It’s an honour and also a responsibility for me since the giant slalom event is my specialty. “I am well-prepared though. The international exposure I received in the Turkey and Iran races will be of great help.”
Karim will aim at winning the giant slalom competition which is also his favourite discipline in Alpine skiing.
It is worth mentioning that Muhammad Abbas (Pakistan Air Force) was the first Pakistani Skier to represent the country in 2010 Winter Olympics.
Both the Olympics and 2014 Winter Paralympics are being organized by the Sochi Organizing Committee (SOC). Sochi was selected as the host city in July 2007, during the 119th IOC Session held in Guatemala City. It is the first Olympics in Russia since the breakup of the USSR in 1991. The USSR was the host nation for the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow.
