Sharapova and Nadal win Madrid crown

In the absence of Serena Williams, Eighth seeded Russian Maria Sharapova was crowned the Madrid queen Sunday yesterday when she beat her Romanian opponent Simona Halep 1-6 6-2 6-3 – this was her 11th unbeaten run on clay court.

Although she lost her first set to Halep 1-6, she quickly recovered to win the next to sets. Ahead of French Open later this month, this win is a healthy sign for the Russian and a form-fitness test to gear up to meet Serena Williams in Paris.

In the men’s final, world number one Rafael Nadal finally rebounded after his successive defeats at Monte Carlo and Barcelona and won the final against back injured Japanese opponent Kei. Like Sharapova, Nadal lost the first set, but quickly recovered to take the second and was 3-0 in the third set when Kei retired due to back injury.

The victory makes Nadal the first tennis player to win four Madrid titles. I twas also his 27th victory in Masters 1000 series. Ahead of French Open, this is a good recovery for Rafa.
