Australian Open: Djokovic and Sharapova move to third round


World no.1 and defending champion Novak Djokovic beat 20 years old American Ryan Harrison 3-0 and moves to the third round of the Australian Open tennis championship.

Playing on the Rod Laver Arena, the Serbian beat the American 6-1 6-2 6-3. In the third set at 4-2, the American put up a stiff resistance and played deuce after deuce to finally win the his game to take the score to 4-3. However, Djokovic won the next two games to win the third set 6-3.

In the women's single category, world no.2 Maria Sharapova of Russia beat Japanese Misaki Doi in straight sets 6-0 6-0 to move to the third round.

The upset of the day was the match between world 9 Australian Samantha Stosur and 40th ranked Chinese Jie Zheng. The Chinese beat the Australian  6-4 1-6 7-5 and ousts world no.9 from the Australian Open.

On Day-4, 17th January, world no.2 Roger Federer, world no.3 Andy Murray, world no.7 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga will play their second round matches.

In the women's singles world no.1 Victoria Azarenka , world no.3 Serena Williams, world no.8 Petra Kvitova and world nho.10 Caroline Wozniacki will play theiur second round of matches.

World No.1 Azarenka beaten by Serena Williams - WTA Istanbul

What many thought to be expected, world no.1 Victoria Azarenka was taken aback by US Open and Wimbledon Champion world no. 3 American Serena Williams 6-4, 6-4. Thus Azarenka failed to avenge her defeat at the hands of Williams at the US Open finally this year.

Azarenka had just yesterday overcome a strong resistance from German Angelique Kerber and lost the first set 6(11) -7(13). But regained the match and beat the German winning the next two sets 7(7)-6(2), 6-4. And it was thought that she would not be a hot pie for Serena to eat easily. But Serena found it easy to beat Azarenka just like that.

In the first match fo the Day-3, 7th ranked Chinese Na Li beat 6th ranked German Angelique Kerber 6-4, 6-3. Na Li was earlier beaten by Serena Williams 7(7)-6(2), 6-3 on Day 2.
