Armstrong says sorry for taking performance-enhancing drugs

Admitting one's faults and crime is one thing, but publicly apologizing and saying sorry is just another - and perhaps noble.

This is exactly what Lance Armstrong, the seven time Tour de France winner, who was later stripped of his honours for taking energy intensifying banned drugs, finally did in an interview with American chat show queen Oprah Winfrey.

However, after the interview while speaking to CBS this morning about the 'intense and emotional' interview that took place in Austin, Texas, Oprah said: 'He did not come clean in the manner I expected, I was surprised.'

After years of bitter and forceful denials, he offered a simple 'I’m sorry' to friends and colleagues and then admitted he used performance-enhancing drugs during an extraordinary cycling career that included those seven Tour de France triumphs.

Armstrong is said to have spoken openly to Travis Tygart about doping, claiming it was rampant in all sports, especially NFL football, and that he was being singled out for punishment.

Now that he has been stripped off of all the honours and awards, including the seven title, he is being pushed into courts for frauds he committed.

The latest is that Lance Armstrong is being sued by The Sunday Times for more than £1million after it lost a libel action to the disgraced cyclist for printing doping claims now known to be true.

It may be added that The Sunday Times paid Armstrong £300,000 in 2006 to settle a case after it reprinted claims from a book alleging that Armstrong had taken performance-enhancing drugs.When he was cycling, he was a hero.

He is expected to lose out on £30 million in sponsorship over next five years. The Sunday Times, owned by Rupert Murdoch's News Corp., said its total claim against Armstrong is 'likely to exceed' £1 million pounds
