For long Pelé, Mueller and Maradona reined and commanded the football fields - when it was their time. But that was long ago when these three legendary players made headlines and scored goals no one else had scored till then and a long time thereafter.

For instance, Pele scored 75 goals in a calendar year in 1958 and Mueller scored 85 in 1972.

Then emerged another player from Argentina, just like the three legends above and who has by just 25 years of age as of now has broken Pelé's record of 75 goals and is now almost on the edge of breaking Mueller's record of 85 goals. Having scored 82 goals in 2012, Lionel Andrés Messi is just three goals short of equaling Mueller's record and has his eye set much ahead and making history and record for himself.

In 2012, Messi made UEFA Champions League history by becoming the first player to score five goals in one match. He also matched José Altafini's record of 14 goals in a single Champions League season. He also became the first player to top-score in four successive Champions League campaigns. He set the world record for most goals scored in a season during the 2011–12 season, with 73 goals. In the same season, he set the current goal scoring record in a single La Liga season, scoring 50 goals.

Messi was the top scorer of the 2005 FIFA World Youth Championship with six goals. In 2006, he became the youngest Argentine to play in the FIFA World Cup and he won a runners-up medal at the Copa América tournament the following year, in which he was elected young player of the tournament.

His playing style and stature have drawn comparisons to Diego Maradona, who himself declared Messi as his "successor".

It is just matter of days when we shall hear the news of Messi equaling Mueller's record of 85 goals and then going on to surpass the record to set yet another challenge for some other Messi in times to come.
