Arsenal brush aside Wigan Athletic to reach FA Cup final

The Gunners did it - they beat Wigan Athletic in the FA Cup semis on penalties to eye for the FA Cup after a drought of nine years. They last won the trophy in 2005.

The game was preceded by a minute's silence in memory of the 96 Liverpool fans killed in the Hillsborough disaster, which occurred during an FA Cup semi-final in Sheffield on April 15, 1989.

The match between Arsenal and Wigan remained goalless in the first half – it was Wigan’s Jordi Gómez who took the lead to score the first goal of the day for his team on a penalty in the 63rd minute of the match. However, the superiority was nullified by Gunner Mertesacker in the 82nd minutes. Thereafter, no one could overtake the other till the final whistle blew.

The match was therefore decided on penalties, which Arsenal won 4-2 amid a big roar from the crowd to qualify for the final.

For holders Wigan it was great setback, who had stunned the Citizens in last season's final to win the trophy and were looking forward to defend their title this year.

Wigan Athletic vs Maribor: UEFA Europa League | Watch Free Live Streaming - 12 December

Wigan Athletic and Maribor will go head to head for an outside chance of reaching the UEFA Europa League knock-out phase in Slovenia on Thursday, 12 December tonight.

The winner could progress to the round-of-32 if Belgian side Zulte Waregem, who sit second, lose at Group D winners Rubin Kazan.

Who will win - we shall wait and see. But Wigan Athletic must beat Maribor to keep alive their hopes of reaching the last 32 of the Europa League.

However, a win against bottom-placed Maribor would mean nothing for Wigan if Waregem defeat the already-qualified Rubin Kazan in the night's other fixture.

Possible starting lineups:
Maribor: Handanovic; Rajcevic, Viler, Arghus, Mezga; Mertelj, Filipovic, Milec, Tavares; Fajic, Bohar

Wigan: Carson; Boyce, Ramis, Barnett, Crainey; Watson, McCann, McArthur, Gomez; Powell, Holt

The UEFA Europa League match is scheduled between Maribor - Wigan Athletic on 12 December, 2013 at 18:00 GMT.

Wigan relegated after 4-1 defeat by the Gunners

It was a sad day for the Wigan Athletic yesterday as their eight-season tenure in the Premier League came to an end when they were beaten by the Gunners 4-1.

The Gunners were firing goal vollies one after the other agisnt the lone goal by the Wigan in 45th minute.

Realistically Wigan had to win to keep their survival hopes alive.

Arsenal are now fourth - a point ahead of Tottenham with one game to go and the Gunners know a win at Newcastle on Sunday will guarantee a place in next season's Champions League.

Wigan's defeat also means that Sunderland and Aston Villa can now also rest easy heading into the final weekend.

It may be recallled that Ferguson made five changes from Wednesday's 4-3 victory over Newcastle United for Saturday's 2-0 win over West Bromwich Albion. He brought in Robin van Persie in the 66th minute, and the Netherlands international scored his league-leading 14th goal for the final margin.

As for Wigan Athletic, they have moved out of the relegation zone with Saturday's 3-0 victory at Aston Villa.

Watch Live Newcastle United - Wigan Athletic Free Streaming | Premier League: 3 December

The battle between 14th placed Newcastle United and 15th placed Wigan is set to take place Monday evening today in the ongoing matches of the Premier League at St James' Park.

Newcastle has had a bad spell recently as it had faced four successive defeats and starting the month of December with a win should serve as a good omen for their future pursuits in the Premier League.

Wigan should feel lucky to win the match against Newcastle today at St James' Park as they have never won a Premier League here. However, they are lucky enough to win three of their last six matches - and lost the other three as compared to just one win, one draw and four defeats in case of the Newcastle.

In the last 10 matches of Premier League since 2006, both Newcastle and Wigan have won four matches each and had two ended in a draw. As of now, both teams have almost similar form of fitness and one can not really say which side is going to be heavier this evening.

The likely lineups are as under for Monday's match:
Newcastle United (Possible, 4-4-2): Krul; Simpson, Coloccini, Williamson, Santon; Anita, Marveaux, Tiote, Gutiérrez; Ba, Cissé.

Wigan Athletic (Possible, 3-4-3): Al Habsi; Boyce, Lopez, Figueroa; Stam, McCarthy, McArthur, Beausejour; Kone, Gomez, Di Santo.

Referee: Mike Jones

The match is scheduled for Monday, 3 December 2012 at 20:00 GMT at St James' Park.

For Sunday’s match, Chelsea are clear favourites, but being 'natives' Wigan Athletic are likely to put up a befitting response with their pace up front.

Watch Live Blackburn Rovers Vs Wigan Athletic: England Premier League

Monday night's match between Blackburn and Wigan is very important for both teams.

For the Rovers, it is a matter of survival - if they win the last couple of games that remain by decent margin, they stay othrwise it is life in the next season's Championship.

On the other hand, Athletics too need one win from the remaining tow matches to avoid relegation. If they get this crucial point, they will be beyond Blackburn's reach and will also be 3 points & 9 goals better than Bolton before the final gameday.

Who can do it? Well it seems Wigan is in best form to do it with 5-0-2, while Blackburn with 1-0-6 seem to have lost heart and their 'b(l)ackburner' to show any signs of life.

The match is scheduled for Monday, 7th May 2012 at the Ewood Park. The KO time: 19:00 GMT
