Both ladies have only played once before each other at Toronto 2009, when Williams beat Y. Shvedova 6-3, 6-2 in the second round.
Serena has lost only two of her last ten matches, both on clay at Rome and french Open and reached fourth round beating Chiense J. Zheng 6-7(5) 6-2 9-7.
Shvedova has lost only one of her last ten matches at Frencch Open at the hands of P. Kvitova 3-6 6-2 6-4. She beat Italian Sara Errani 6-0 6-4 in the thrid round.
