The two matches played on the Day-1 ended in a goalless draw - what a pity.
It was pity to see the host South Africa helpless to score even a single goal against Cape Verde which was playing its maiden match in the Afcon Saturday. Bafana Bafana struggled to overcome their tag as a side who struggle to score goals, failing to create clear-cut chances in the Johannesburg rain. Cape Verde had the best opportunity of the game, with striker Platini dragging his close-range shot badly wide.
The result, however, gives the Blue Sharks their first Nations Cup point.
--> The second match between Angola and Morocco was yet another disappointment The goalless draw was not something for which fans had thronged the arena.
Although semblance of effort to goal was seen when Moroccan Younes Belhanda almost forced a winner as he dribbled through the Angolan defence, but dragged narrowly wide at the near post. Likewise, Angolan debutant Guilherme Afonso nearly punished Morocco keeper Nadir Lamyaghri's fumble, only to lob wide.
So that was about Day-1, a goalless opening.
