Afridi's seven sixes save match for Pakistan

Pakistan that won the match against India, thanks to fiery sixes and fours of Shahid Afridi at the Asia Cup in Bangladesh, was up against Bangladesh with heavy odds yesterday.

Bangladesh scored an impressive 326 gave a very target of 327 to Pakistan to win. Banagladesh's Anamul Haque scored a century while three others made half centuries. And Pakistan found it really difficult to achieve it. In fact Pakistan has never chased a target of 327 in its history - which made Pakistan's victory very sceptic

When Pakistan came to bat, its top order line except for Shehzad's 103 crumbled and a stage came when it almost looked impossible for Pakistan to win. The local crowd was ecstatic for a win and were roaring and shouting with joy. Each wicket that fell brought the crowd to yell and wait for the victory - till Shahid Afridi came.

Shahid Afridi was the man who won the match for Pakistan against India and it was he who could save the match for Pakistan. And he sure did. In just 25 balls, he scored an impressive 59 with SEVEN mighty sixes and two fours. At one point he was dropped none other than by the Bangladeshi captain and the crowd really lamented and some girls were seen crying.

Afridi, who had his muscle pulled in his fiery performance, could not run in making a single and was run out. The crowd became mad with joy and it looked as if the hosts will win.

Then Fawad who had played a consistent match also succumbed to the hosts for an impressive 74 - when Pakistan needed just two more runs with two balls remaining. It was Umer Akmal who finally hit a four to win the match for Pakistan. Suddenly the entire crowd went in a silence for they were just waiting for a big roar but could not.

The tigers were tamed right inside their home by the visitors. Afridi won the coveted man of the match award - he really deserved it. Defending champion Pakistan now plays final of the Asia Cup against Sri Lanka.

The last two sixes of Shahid Afridi against India [video]

Pakistan beat Indian by one wicket in their first encounter in the 6th match of the on going Asia Cup cricket at Dhaka Bangladesh.

The match had a hair raising finish as in the last over, with no wickets to spare Pakistan needed nine runs to win the match.

It was here that Pakistan's Shahid Afridi, famous for his fiery shots came to the rescue of Pakistan. He had already shot a six earlier. But in the last over, his two mighty sixes stunned the Indian team and won victory for Pakistan.

Watch the video below

It was repetition of the Sharjha Cup many years back when Pakistan needed four runs off the last ball against India - and Javed Miandad hit a unbelievable six to win the match for Pakistan.

Those who watched the cricket match between India and Pakistan live from Mirpur – Dhaka, Bangladesh would remember it for a long time to come.

The hair-raising finish of the match reminded many of the Sharjah Cup final match when there was one ball remaining and four runs to make for Pakistan to win – and it was a mighty six from Javed Miandad that won the match for Pakistan and Javed Miandad is till remembered for winning the match for Pakistan.

Winning the toss, Pakistan invited India to bat. India in their stipulated 50 overs scored 245 at the loss of eight wickets and gave a target of 246 for Pakistan to win.  India’s Sharma,  Rayudu and Jadeja scored half centuries while Pakistan’s Saeed Ajmal bagged three wickets for 40. Talha who made a maiden début in the ODIs for Pakistan took two wickets and so did Hafeez.

Coming to bat, Pakistan’s Sharjeel and Shehzad opened confidently but at 71 Sharjeel was gone for 25. Thereafter Misbah was run out for one and Maqsood was the 6th man to pack up for 38. At this stage Pakistan was at a precarious situation as one after the other Pakistan’s wickets kept falling, leaving Afridi and Junaid on the crease with no more wickets in hand.  Ajmal was the last man out when the total was 236 and Pakistan still needed 10 more runs to win the match.

And it was here that Shahid Afridi came to the rescue of his team  and hit a six and then Pakistan needed three more runs and three balls remaining. It was here that Afridi scored a mighty six off Aswin’s ball and won the match for Pakistan – just like Miandad did.  The entire Pakistan team ran into the ground and hugged Afridi for his superb 38 off 18 balls (not out), which included three sixes.

Hafeez declared man of the match for his impressive 75 runs and two wickets.

Commenting on his performance, Afridi said:

Really under pressure, didn't perform well. Hit some bad shots. "Expectations were high. We all know how importat this game was and I am glad I did it. The captain told me to take my time and I did that. Whenever we play against India it's a great occasion and I'm very happy. Gul was talking a lot with me, we wanted singles as well and we needed a hit as well. When we arrived here, our goal was to win this competition. Very important for my country and team and I want to thank Bangladeshi crowd for supporting us"
Pakistan now plays Bangladesh on Tuesday.

Pakistan Hockey Team Fails to Qualify for World Cup for the First Time Since 1971

South Koreans rejoice on their semi final win against Pakistan at Ipoh [Photo]
It was the darkest day of Pakistan's hockey history when its national team failed to qualify for the hockey world Cup 2014 since it was instituted in 1971.

Pakistan Hockey which once had the singular honour of holding all hocey titiles, including the Olympics, simultaenously has been in a pretty bad form for the last decade or even more. But losing the bus to World Cup 2014 was a very sad and lamenting day for Pakistan.

It may be added that Pakistan won the inaugural competition in 1971 and triumphed again in 1978, 1982 and 1994.

Pakistan went down 2-1 to South Korea in the Asia Cup semi-final in Malaysia on Friday, a tournament they needed to win to qualify for the 2014 World Cup in the Netherlands.

A strong protest has been launched by the former Olympians and hockey legends in Pakistan who have demanded the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) officials to resign immediately after the disastrous performance in the 9th Asia Cup at Ipoh, Malaysia which deprived Pakistan of qualifying for the World Cup 2014 and let others to handle the hockey affairs to revive the national game in the country.

Pakistan were leading 36-31 midway through the second half when Indian ace attacker Suhkvinder Singh raided the Pakistani area for the second successive time , a big technical mistake as a player cannot go for attack for two times in a row.

At this point the match officials intervened and tried to control the situation by listening point of view of both the sides and finally upheld the protest of the home team on which the Indians refused to continue the game, forfeiting the match when ace of Pakistani team, Babar Gujjar entered the Indian area for attack but no one from the opposition made any move and Gujjar returned in jubilation taking Pakistani score to 40-31.

Speaker Punjab Assembly Rana Mohammad Iqbal and Indian Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukbir Singh Badal were the chief guests on the occasion and witnessed the absorbing tie with keen interest.

ICC rejects claim Bangladesh was deprived of 5 penalty runs in 2-run loss in Asia Cup final

The International Cricket Council has rejected Bangladesh's claim that it was deprived of five penalty runs in its two-run loss to Pakistan in the Asia Cup final last week.
Bangladesh Cricket Board claims Pakistan bowler Aizaz Cheema deliberately blocked batsman Mahmudullah when he attempted a second run on the first ball of the 50th over.

Australian umpire Steve Davis failed to signal for any penalty runs and play resumed after he had talked with Cheema.
An ICC spokesman says the "umpire's decision is final and it cannot be changed."

In what could be termed as a classic finish the roaring Bengal Tigers were tamed by the Green Shirts and won their second Asia Cup cricket tournament by defeating Bangladesh. Bangladesh had to make four runs on the last ball - but could only make 1 leg bye.
Tense moments for the Bangladesh crowd
Aizaz Cheema was the bowler, who kept his nerves in the last over and did not let a 4 on his last ball to Shahadat, who had just walked in after the dismissal of Razzaq on Cheema's 5th delivery.

Pakistan expects a "tough" final match against Bangladesh

Senior Pakistan batsman Younis Khan paid respect to Bangladesh for its gutsy performances and expected a hard-fought final.
Khan says Bangladesh's teamwork is "tremendous," and the team has demonstrated a "great strength" to chase any big total. He said that the Green Shirts contemplate a tough final match against the Bengal Tigers Thursday.
On the other hand, Bangladesh skipper  Mushfiqur Rahim is confident he can lead Bangladesh to an historic victory when it plays in its first Asia Cup final against Pakistan at Mirpur Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium on Thursday.

Rahim says, "We are now so close and do not want to lose the chance."
Bangladesh beat both World Cup finalists, champion India and Sri Lanka, to reach the final, and lost to Pakistan by 21 runs in the round-robin.

Asia Cup Final 22 March: Bangladesh vs Pakistan - Watch Free Live Streaming

The ongoing Asia Cup cricket tournament in Bangladesh has been amazing. It started off with India as the hot favourite, followed by either Pakistan or Sri Lanka reaching the final to take on the defending champions. No one talked of the hosts Bangladesh.

But to everyone's surprise, the Bengal Tigers stunned and surprised everyone. All speculations were turned wrong by the superb cricket shown by the hosts - from the underdogs, the became the roaring tigers to face Pakistan in the final of the Asia Cup 2012 being played on 22 March Thursday.

And what is more surprising that the hosts won over majestically not over the defending champion India, but also the Sri Lanka who have been the cup holder in the past. Their margin of 5-wickets victory over Sri Lanka was tremendous.  For the hosts the march into the final is history making, for which the entire country is jubilant, fully charged to support their team when they enter the Shere Bangla stadium to meet Pakistan. It may be added here that Pakistan, in its first opening match with the hosts, could barely win over by a narrow margin of 21 runs. This shows the form and excellent training with which the hosts have entered into the tournament.

The ouster of the defending champion and four times winner Sri Lanka must be shocking for both the countries. Sri Lanka this time could not win even a single match, while India paid the price of losing to the hosts.

Although, the Green Shirts are favourite for the final, they have had their problems in playing the limited over matches with England recently. Having won over the test series 3-0, the lost all ODIs and the T20Is to England. Even in the on going Asia Cup, their bowlers have not shown the shine as many were contemplating to witness. In Pakistan's match with India, the usual spirit was evidently seen lacking, which led to the defeat of the Green Shirts at the hands of the defending champions.

Now it is the final on Thursday - a big day indeed for both the teams, but specially for the hosts as they play for the final for the first time since the tournament started.

The likely opposing teams for the final on 22 March are as under:
Pakistan: Misbah-ul-Haq (captain), Abdur Rehman, Aizaz Cheema, Asad Shafiq, Azhar Ali, Hammad Azam, Mohammad Hafeez, Nasir Jamshed, Saeed Ajmal, Sarfraz Ahmed (wk), Shahid Afridi, Umar Akmal, Umar Gul, Wahab Riaz, Younis Khan.

Bangladesh: Mushfiqur Rahim (captain; wk), Abdur Razzak, Anamul Haque, Elias Sunny, Imrul Kayes, Jahurul Islam, Mahmudullah, Mashrafe Mortaza, Nasir Hossain, Nazimuddin, Nazmul Hossain, Shafiul Islam, Shahadat Hossain, Shakib Al Hasan, Tamim Iqbal.

And one last question that must be bothering everyone: Who will win the final? Well Pakistan has only once won the title in 2000 which was incidently played in Bangladesh. Pakistan's batsmen look confident - but their bowlers haven't shown the spirit and have allowed runs to slip by them in great numbers, specially in their match against India. But despite all odds, they still are the favourites. Bangladesh on the other hand is in high spirits after winning over the Lankans and have the great support of their home crowd which will be much more charged and supportive of their team.

We wait till the match begins Thursday 22 March 2012 at Shere Bangla stadium. The match commences 08:00 GMT.

Asia Cup 2012: Bangladesh wins 6th ODI to Play Final against Pakistan

In what is called a dramatic finish, Bangladesh beat Sri Lank by 5 wickets to qualify for the final of the Asia Cup cricket tournament. Bangladesh now plays Pakistan, which has already qualified for the final, on 22 March 2012.

Sri Lanka batting first was restricted to a reduced target of 212 due to a mid-innings downpour  and Bangladesh was given the target to chase in reduced 40 overs.

And playing superbly, the hosts achieved the target with 17 balls remaining of 40 overs and won over Sri Lanka with five wickets remaining. The Bangladesh prime minister who was witnessing the match was overjoyed just like the who crowd at Shere Bangla stadium. Bangladesh played both the 2011 finalists and what many say came very close beating the former ODI champion Pakistan.

For Bangladesh, it is a great day as they were not hot favourites for the final and everyone expected India an easy sail in after Sri Lanka beat the hosts. But Bangladesh played smarter than the Lankans and qualified for the final. The win today also whitewashes Indian dream to defend the title, they had been longing so dearly all along since the tournament started. And no one considered Bangladesh as a possible finalist.

But now it is Bangladesh playing Pakistan in the final - and Pakistan will have to be very careful playing the hosts as they in their first match with Pakistan almost made them lose it - it was Umer Gul's last minute stand and adding valuable 39 runs that gave Pakistan victory over the hosts.

What comes now in the final - everyone eaglerly awaits the final on 22 March.

Bangladesh vs Sri Lanka: The decider for Asia Cup Final ODI [Watch Free Live Streaming]

Host Bangladesh play Sri Lanka the last ODI of the Asia Cup cricket - an ODI that will decide who will play Pakistan in the final of the tournament.

India though won the match against Pakistan on Sunday, awaits the result of the match today to see whether it gets a chance to defend the title this year or not.

Although Sri Lanka are out of the Asia Cup but their last ODI against Bangladesh which is being played today (Tuesday, March 20) is of utmost importance to Bangladesh. Even a one-wicket win would push them into the final at the expense of India.

Who would Pakistan like to face in final? Well that is what everyone is quietly asking. Many however opine that Pakistan will like to face India and rob them of the title India hold of the previous year. But then it all depends on Pakistan's bowlers to perform as they did against England in the test matches.

Asia Cup Cricket: India beat Pakistan by six wickets

Although Pakistan set a big target for India to chase, but it was India's Virat Kohli's 183 off 148 balls that helped India chase 330 against Pakistan in the ongoing Asia Cup cricket at Mirpur, Dacca Bangladesh. Incidently,  183  was Kohli's  career-best.

Batting first, the two Pakistan openers Mohammad Hafeez and Nasir Jamshed secured century each and provided a valuable 224-run opening partnership to Pakistan. It was  Pakistan's second-highest in ODIs. Although Younis has been criticized for being slow in this format, but today he was at ease as the innings neared its close. Orthodox punches and lofts raced for boundaries through the off side and Pakistan were able to afford a lack lustre display from Shahid Afridi. Pakistan scored 329 at the end of 50 overs. Pakistan was dormant in the last five overs for God knows why - had they kept the pressure, they could have easily taken the score beyond 350.

Coming to bat, the Indian openers were not able to sustain the initial bowling onslaught. And Wahaab and Saeed struck and sent Gambhir for nothing and Tendulkar for 52. But then nothing happened fro long as Kohli stayed to provide India the much needed score to match Pakistan's 329. After Gul dismantled Kohli, came Sharma, who added another valuable 68 before being struck by Shahid Afridi. With 13 balls remaining, Sharma and Dhoni ended the match by totaling 330 for India. Obviously Kohli became the player of the match.

Now what next? Who playes Pakistan in the final. This will greatly depend on what happens after Sri Lanka plays with Bangladesh the last ODI of the series. The outcome of the match will decide whether it is India or Bangladesh depending on the run rate.

So let us wait till the match between hosts and Sri Lanka being played on 20th March. Who are you thinking would win?

India-Pakistan ODI - Rameez Raja predicts a trial by spin

The big India-Pakistan game in the Asia Cup would be a "trial by spin" for batsmen and the team that will collectively tackle spin better will win, says former Pakistan captain Rameez Raja.

Referring to the batsmen and spinners-friendly pitch at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricker Stadium, Rameez also said there was no clear favourite team for him as both teams would start on equal footing.

'Pakistan's recent one-day form has not been great, even though they had a great year. So, you can never count Pakistan out because they've got individual brilliance; some of the players are match winners.

And the same goes for India. So it's going to be a very close contest,' Rameez, here as a television commentator, told MAIL TODAY in an interview.

Asia Cup 2012 - India vs Pakistan | Free Live Streaming

India is to meet Pakistan Sunday to find a place for itself in the final of the ongoing Asia Cup in Dacca, Bangladesh. Pakistan having won both of its matches against the hosts and the Lankans has already made its place in the finals.

Indian camp is though much trumpeted about the 100th 100 of Tendulkar against Bangladesh, has nevertheless has lost the match miserably, being the hot favourite of the on going Asia Cup. In fact the Indians would have never ever thought of losing tho the hosts ever and must be still in a shock over what the hosts did to them.

As for India, Sunday's match with Pakistan is very crucial - they have to win it to reach the final. In case they do not, and Sri Lanka manages to win over the hosts, then all three teams will have four points each. In that case the decision as to which team out of the three reaches final, will depend on the set run rate.

With the defeat at the hands of Bangladesh at the back of their minds, India thus plays its most crucial match of the tournament against Pakistan and would naturally be under tremendous pressure while playing the Pakistan team.

Tendulkar will be the main threat to Pakistan as he has always played better against Pakistan and after feeling easy and relaxed having had his 100th 100, he is likely to play his natural game and score too. While the Indian batsmen have played well so far, their bowlers haven't shown any remarkable bowling - something which just the opposite case with Pakistan wherein bowlers have bowled extremely well, but it is their batsmen who have let them down with their ODIs/T20 against England lately.

Sunday's duel comes almost a year after both Pakistan and India met at Mohali last March. A lot has changed since then. Let us watch the game Sunday tomorrow and see who surprises who - or are there any surprises at all?

The match will be played at the usual Shere Bangla Stadium Mirpur, Dacca and will commence at 08:00 GMT.

Likely team composition:
India: Gautam Gambhir, Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, Suresh Raina, MS Dhoni (c/wk), Rohit Sharma, Ravindra Jadeja, Irfan Pathan, R Ashwin, Vinay Kumar, Praveen Kumar.
Pakistan: Mohammad Hafeez, Nasir Jamshed, Younis Khan, Asad Shafiq, Misbah-ul-Haq (c), Umar Akmal, Shahid Afridi, Sarfraz Ahmed (wk), Umar Gul, Saeed Ajmal, Aizaz Cheema.

Hosts Bangladesh face India in Asia Cup Friday - Watch Free Online [Links]

India , today Friday, takes on hosts Bangladesh in the fourth ODI of the Asia Cup cricket series - a match that would pave way for the final for India. The defending champions are hot favourite for the match today with a strong Head to head ratio of 21:2 against Bangladesh, and likely to win too.

As for Bangladesh, their chances for reaching the final are slim, nevertheless there is no harm in trying to beat India. It may be remembered that Bangladesh did give a tough time to Pakistan in their first match of the tournament on 11 March. It will all depend on the hosts' spinners how they perform and dismantle the strong Indian batting line.

Pakistan wins ODI against Sri Lanka by 6 wickets

Pakistan Won!!
Jubilant Misbah and Azam as Pakistan dismantles Sri Lanka with 6 wickets in hand
Well that was a good news as many cricket fans were keeping their fingers crossed and speculated that Sri Lanka would strike back after their defeat at the hands of the Indians by 50 runs on 13 March, to make their presence felt in the tournament.

But today was another day. Sri Lanka batting first gave a target of 188 for Pakistan to chase. While the Sri Lanka openers did not do well, it was captain Sangakkara who played marvelously and scored 71 before being bowled by Aizaz Cheema. Next worthwhile contribution came from Tharanga who scored 57 when Saeed Ajmal struck and sent him back to the pavilion. At best the Sri Lanka made 188 in 45.4 overs.

Aizaz Cheema was the most deadly bowler today who took four wickets for 43 in 9 overs. Saeed ajmal followed closely and took 3 for 27 in 8.4 overs including one maiden over. Umer Gul did not do less and took 2 for 20 with one maiden over.

When it came to Pakistan to bat, there was disaster in the begining. Openers crashed too soon and so did Younis Khan. Hafeez, Jamshed and Younis could only add 31 runs. Sri Lankan Lakmal was instrumental in sending Younis and Jamshed back to rest room. But then came Umar Akmal and captain Misbah - and to everyone's surprise, Misbah stood his ground. Both Akmal and Misbah added very valuable 149 runs. Umar was unlucky to play a high angle shot when at 77 and was caught by Tharanga on the ball of Maharoof.

The joyous mustached replacement of Chacha Cricket as Pakistan wins
Misbah was joined in by Azam after Umer, who hit the winning 4, while Misbah was 77 and brought victory to Pakisan.

Aizaz Cheema - the bowling hero of Pakistan against Sri Lanka Thursday
Well played Sri Lanka, but credit does go to Aizaz Cheema for dismantiling Sri Lankan batting line and to Misbah and Umar Akmal for scoring tremendously that led to Pakistan's victory.

Aizaz rightly awarded the player of the match award.

Much satisfied Misbah walks back to pavilion after winning over Sri Lanka
Commenting on the day's play, Pakistan captain Misbah said:
"It was a really good partnership between me and Umar Akmal. I told him to play his normal game, the runs automatically came. Cheema was hit for a lot of fours in his first couple of overs. I told him your main weapon is aggression, so bowl with aggression, No point containing batsmen on these pitches, best to take wickets. It was important for me to get my confidence back, England series was not good for me, so this innings is a confidence booster. We have to be more consistent with the bat, the bowling is always keeping us in hunt."

Well now, Pakistan should be in high spirits and Misbah too, who was earlier being blamed for his slow paced batting. His wonderful performance is certainly a good omen for Pakistan who get ready now for their encounter with India on 18 March.

Watch Pakistan vs Sri Lanka 3rd ODI Asia Cup 2012 Live Streaming - 15 March

Both Pakistan and Sri Lanka will be playing their second match of the on going Asia Cup cricket at Dacca, Bangladesh on Thursday 15 March.

Pakistan played its first match and the opening match of the Asia Cup on 11 March at Shere Bangla Stadium Mirpur Dacca with the hosts Bangladesh and won by 21 runs. Although Bangladesh played very well and Pakistan was almost at the verge of losing had Umer Gul not stood his ground in the last crucial overs. In fact it was his superb 39 runs that made the difference in the end that allowed a victory for Pakistan over Bangladesh. It may however be wrong not to mention the tons provided by Hafeez who not only scored 89, but later took two wickets too and was declared man of the match.

As for Sri Lanka, they have had a bad start and lost to spirited Indian in their first clash. India gave a target of 320 to the Sri Lankans, who failed to catch up and lost by 50 runs.

Now a word about Thursday's match between Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

Although Pakistan had a winning start, the team does not seem to be in its full form. In fact much weight is being given to Hafeez and bowlers Saeed Ajmal and Umer Gul. The rest of the batsmen have yet to put up an impressive show, specially the ace players like captain Misbah, Younis and Afridi. Misbah's docility both as captain and batsman has been a source of great concern for Pakistan's selectors. Pakistan will have to put up an aggressive show against Sri Lanka, which though have lost to India, but has had superb cricket recently in Australia.

As for Sri Lanka, there a re fitness issues. As per a recent report, Angelo Mathews is not  available for match against Pakistan due to calf injury. Malinga too has fitness problem due to injury. Although he had attended the training session today, the decision to include him in the squad or otherwise remains pending.
