Costa Rica and USA plough on with World Cup qualifier in snowfall

It was a match to watch - and watch they did in snowfall, shouting for their teams in shivering cold and heavy snow. This is the spirit of the game and fans.

And despite the heavy snow fall in Colorado last night the players fought on and USA team won the World Cup qualifying match 1-0 against Costa Rica, despite the referee considering abandoning the game in the second half.

Clint Dempsey scored the only goal of the game early on, with only a light dusting of snow covering the pitch.

'It was difficult out here to see anything,' Dempsey told ESPN. 'The second half, the snow coming up past your ankles, it was almost unplayable.'

Costa Rica seemed to have a harder time dealing with the blizzard, and had 24 hours to file a written protest with FIFA.

Midfielder Michael Barrantes said: 'You couldn't see the lines. You couldn't see the ball. You couldn't play.'

Plows and shovels were used to clear the penalty areas, center circle and midfield stripe as snow got heavier, and a yellow-and-purple ball was used.
