Football: Monaco set to make world record £85m bid for Cristiano Ronaldo

Monaco is poised to make a world record €100m (£85m) bid for Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo, it is learnt.

Ronaldo has just two years left on his contract at Madrid and is known to be disillusioned with life at the Santiago Bernabeu, at the end of his fourth season there.

Monaco are closely monitoring Ronaldo's negotiations with Real Madrid over a contract extension, and if no deal is done by late July or August they will make their move.

Monaco is reported to offer Ronaldo an annual salary of €20m, which would equate to nearly £330,000 per week. The principality of Monaco does not charge its residents income tax and so Ronaldo would become the highest-paid footballer in the world.

It may be added that The Ligue 1 club, funded by Russian billionaire Dmitry Rybolovlev, have already spent over £110m this summer on Radamel Falcao of Atletico Madrid and James Rodriguez and Joao Moutinho of Porto.

Watch Live Stream Free Online: Djokovic vs Monaco ATP Miami-March 30

In my earlier post on the semi between Nadal and Murray which gets played at 19:00 GMT tonight, I mentioned about favourites, hots and odds. While in the first semi final Nadal is being dubbed as hot favourite, in the second semi final obviously it is Djokovic who is being preferred over Monaco to be the hot favourites.

Top seed Serb and the defending champion Djokovic overpowered David Ferrer earlier to reach the semi final tonight. Although the fifth seed Ferrer did gave tough time to Djokovic, the Serb kept his nerve to make his space in the semi final by beating Ferrer 6-2, 7-6 (7-1). In the second set, Djokovic was serving for the set at 5-4, when Ferrer recoiled and gave the Serb a jolt to finally have him win the set on a tie breaker.

Juan Monaco comes to the semi final by a 6-1 6-3 win over American Mardy Fish on Thursday. Incidently, it was Monaco's 28th birthday and what better birthday gift could have been for him for sailing through well and easy into the semi final and facing the top seeded defending champion.Monaco earlier beat American Andy Roddick, giving Rodick a shock of his life as he had earlier beaten Roger Federer and was in very high spirits.

The match tonight that gets underway at 23:00 GMT will decide who meets who in the final of the Miami Masters which is now on its last stage of the tournament.
