The second match of the day figuring a top world ranking player, besides Maria Sharapova, is being played between the defending champion and world no.1 Novak Djokovic from Serbia and 58th ranked French Paul-Henri Mathieu at the Rod Laver Arena Monday, the 14th January.
Djokovic first met Paul-Henri Mathieu at Miami in 2006 and has since played five matches against him, winning all but one at Paris 2006 on a carpet court. Paul-Henri Mathieu won the second round match 7-6(11) 7-6(4).
However as of now, Mathieu doesn't seem to be in any form as he has lost six of his last ten matches. He recently lost four matches in a row, the last one at Kooyong against K. Nishikori 6-0 4-6 6-3.
Djokovic is in best at this time of the year. He lost only once in his last ten matches in Hopman Cup against the recently crowned Sydney titlist Bernard Tomic.
Djokovic is eyeing the title for the fourth time. The absence of Nadal makes her task defending his title somewhat easy as it leaves only two worthwhile players who could threaten his title: aging Roger Federer and emerging Andy Murray.
