Maria Sharapova escapes first set stunner to reach the semis

Defending champion and world no. 2 Maria Sharapova from Russia would never have dreamed of such humiliation when her opponent 18th ranked Serbian Jelena Jankovic took all six games of the first set 6-0.

The quarterfinal match of Roland Garros on Court Philippe Chatrier  must have stunned Sharapova. However, she managed to take control of the game and won over Jankovic 0-6, 6-4, 6-3.

She now meets Victoria Azarenka in the semifinal. Former world no.1 Azarenka beat Maria Kirilenko 7-6 (7-3) 6-2 in the quarters.

It may be added that world no.1 American Serena Williams has already qualified for the semis.
