Sharapova regains her lost French Open Title

Maria Sharapova today beat world no.4 Simona Halep of Romania to regain her lost 2012 tile she lost in defending in 2013 to Serena Williams.

Chris Evert (second from right) presented the French Open trophy to Sharapova

Sharapova lost her first game of the first set, but then cruised confidently to win the set 6-4. However, she lost the second set to Halep on tie break 67-7, although she could win it easily.

It was the third set in which she was not giving in and had her eyes on the trophy she lost in 2013 and played a rather technical game overpowering Halep 6-4.

So congratulations Sharapova for regaining the lost tile - congratulations to Halep for playing her first Grand Slam final and coming too close to winning.

Sharapova beats Azarenka to reach French Open Final for likely date with Serena Williams

Defending champion and world no.2 Russian Maria Sharapova moved within one win of retaining her French Open title b beating former world no.1 Victoria Azarenka 6-1, 2-6, 6-4.

The score shows Azarenka striking back in the second set and winning, only to let the edge subside when she lost the third set to allow Sharapova carry the day.

Sharapova beat Errani in last year's final to complete her set of Grand Slam titles, and she will play in her eighth major final on Saturday.

Sharapova now sets a date with Serena Williams this year in French Open final - something she may not like as Serena has never let her win from her - at least in recent times.

Sharapova lost to Williams in finals of Madrid, Miami this year, while she lost to Williams in semis of Doha and finals of Istanbul and London last year.

It was a surprise day at Rome when world no.1 Serbian was beaten by Czech Tomas Berdych 2-6 7-5 6-4 to Czech in the Internazionali BNL d'Italia - Italian Open quarter-finals.

Djokovic was attempting to win his third Rome title, but has recently been troubled by pain in his ankle.

Rafael Nadal stayed on target for his third straight title as he beat fellow Spaniard David Ferrer 6-4 4-6 6-2.

Benoit  Paire, 24, reached the first Masters Series semi-final of his career with a 6-1 6-0 victory over Spaniard Marcel Granollers and now faces Roger Federer for a place in the Rome final. Meanwhile Federer beat Polish Jerzy Janowicz 6-4 7-6 (7-2) to move on.

Defeat of Djokovic and Murray earlier leaves only Nadal and Federer the top seeded players in the Rome.

Meanwhile the 2012 Roland Garros queen Russian Maria Sharapova's preparations for the French Open suffered a setback after she withdrew from the Italian Open because of illness. Maria was was due to play Sara Errani in Friday's quarter-finals.

Rafael Nadal capped a stunning return to tennis with victory over  Juan Martin Del Potro in the final of the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells. Nadal beat Del Potro 4-6, 6-3, 6-4

Nadal improved to a career-best 17-1 on the year, including 14 straight match wins. He's won three titles - two on clay while runner-up in another on his favorite surface - since returning from a left knee injury.

However, it was confirmed on Sunday that Nadal will not play in Miami next week, with European clay next on his schedule.

World no.2 Maria Sharapova, the French Open titlist from Russia plays her second round match against very less known left-handed 92nd ranked Misaki Doi of Japan at the Hisense Arena Wednesday morning.

Sharapova has never encountered Doi in her professional career before. However, Doi who has lost four of her last ten matches may not be a hurdle in Sharapova's way to the semi finals the least.

Sharapova has lost both to the world no.1 Victoria Azarenka at Beijing and against Serena Williams at Istanbul - the only two matches she lost in her last ten matches.

Though Sharapova would be vying to start the new year with a Grand Slam to herself, but in the presence of Serena Williams this seems least likely.

The Match between Sharapova and Doi is scheduled for Wednesday, 16 January 2013 at 06:30 GMT at the Hisense Arena.
