The race to the Australian throne is almost nearing to the top as 7th ranked Tomas Berdych of Czech Republic faces 8th ranked Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka at Rod Lave Arena Thursday 23 January - the Day 11 of the competition.
This will be the fourteenth encounter between the two since they first met at Rome in 2005. And Wawrinka leads the winning matches 8-5 and is on a three-match winning streak, which includes victories last season at the U.S. Open and World Tour Finals. They last met at London last year in the Robin stage wherein Wawrinka beat Berdych 6-3 6-7(0) 6-3.
Wawrinka has moved to the semis defeating the defending champion Djokovic 2-6 6-4 6-2 3-6 9-7 in a classic match of the competition. Berdych too had a four set match against Ferrer and won 6-1 6-4 2-6 6-4.
For today's match, Wawrinka is being considered as hot favourite for his form, fitness and powerful ground strokes. But one can never be sure of anything as Berdych too is in great form and can be threatening to the Swiss. Berdych had never won a match in Rod Laver Arena except for his quarter final match against Ferrer. So let us see if he can win the semi final today at the Rod Laver Arena.
