Wawrinka crashes out of Paris right in the first round

Photo: Fox Sports
It was too early perhaps for world number 3 Stan Wawrinka to bid farewell to Paris and become the first major casualty at the hands of a 41st ranked Garcia-Lopez right in the first round of Roland Garros yesterday.

Having lost the first set to Garcia-Lopez 4-6, Wawrinka did try to comeback into the game by winning the second set 7-5, but Garcia-Lopez proved too good for him and beat him 6-2 and even 6-0 to move on to perhaps surprise others.

Having won the Australian Open at the start of the year, a confident and rather aggressive Wawrinka was looking to grab the French title to win bot Grand Slams in the same year as did Jim Courier in 1992.

Garcia-Lopez, ranked 41st, now faces France's Adrian Mannarino in round two.

Federer and Murray Dip on ATP Points Table while Wawrinka takes third position

Nadal and Djokovic continue to be nos 1 & 2 - while Wawrinka takes third - Murray and Federer move down to 6 and 8th positions

The Australian Open 2014 was really 'damaging' to many a top seeded players this year. While Wawrinka moved up the ladder, Federer and Murray dipped down considerably on the points table.

Ranked sixth, former world no.1 and 17-times Grand Slam winner Roger Federer moved to the eighth slot - and became Swiss no.2 after Wawrinka took his place as Swiss no.1. Federer had held this position since 2001.

British no.1 Andy Murray who made headlines by wqinning the US Open and Wimbledon has also been hit hard. Instead of moving up, he moved down the ladder to no.6 vacated by Federer. It seems the euphoria created has started to drfit away from him.

As for Wawrinka, his first ever Grand Slam has earned him a career-high third position and also Swiss no.1, replacing Federer. 1,400 points separate the five places between Wawrinka and his fellow Swiss Federer.

Wawrinka, who was as low as 18th in the world in March of last year, claimed his first Grand Slam title in Melbourne to add to his semi-final appearance at the US Open in September to become Switzerland's number one for the first time.

Juan Martin Del Potro of Argentina climbs to fourth.

As for the two top ranking players, Nadal and Djokovic have a great lead ahead of Wawrinka and it may take quite a time for Wawrinka to threaten Djokovic who sits at no.2 and who is 5,000 ahead of Wawrinka.

Nadal has a commanding world no.1 position who is a further 4,000 ahead of Djokovic and may continue to rule the world if he continues to win this year.

Last Setback of Australian Open: Wawrinka beats Nadal

Wawrinka beats Nadal to claim his maiden Grand Slam title
This year, Australian Open has been a competition of setbacks. As the days went by, top seeded players like Djokovic, Murray, Federer, Hewitt and Serena Williams, Sharapova, Azarenka, Ivanovic kept getting ousted from he race.

But the greatest setback was to come today when eighth seeded Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka beat world no.1 and 13 Grand Slam winner Rafael Nadal in a very uncompetitive match by  6-3 6-2 3-6 6-3 and claimed his maiden grand slam. It was also his first Grand Slam title final.

Nadal wasn't himself today right from the outset - his blistered hand deterred him to play the game everyone wanted him to. And so he lost the match with just one set to his credit.

The 28-year-old becomes only the second Swiss man to win a Grand Slam singles title after 17-time champion Roger Federer. Wawrinka is also the first player in two decades to beat the world number one and two in a Grand Slam tournament and will move up to third in the world rankings from eighth. He also has the 'honour' of being the first to beat Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal in a Grand Slam tournament.

Pete Sampras was there at the Rod Laver Arena to see his record of 14-Grand Slams being equalled for the second time - it was Federer who surpassed his record and continued to collect Grand Slams to a figure of 17. But it was unfortunate to see Nadal losing the opportunity right at the start of the new year.

Australian Open Men's Singles Final: Nadal vs Wawrinka | Watch Free Live Streaming - 26 January 2014

Sunday 26 January, world no.1 and 13 times Grand Slam winner Rafael Nadal of Spain meets 8th ranked Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka in the men's singles final of Australian Open at the Rod Laver Arena, Melbourne Park, to decide who is the king of Australian Open for the year 2014.

This will be Nadal's thirteenth encounter with the Swiss, having won all previous 12 matches against him since they first met in the third round of Australian Open in 2007.

Nadal moved to the final, beating world no.6 and 17-times Grand Slam winner Roger Federer in straight sets win on Friday. While Wawrinka ousted defending champion Djokovic in the quarters and moved to the finals after beating Berdych in a tough four sets match 6-3 6-7(1) 7-6(3) 7-6(4).

As for Wawrinka, the Swiss has never played in a men's final in a Grand Slam. He's faced Nadal just twice in a Grand Slam tournament and has been dominated in both, never winning more than three games in a set.

Thus, for Wawrinka, nothing will come easy when facing Nadal, but forcing close matches could be in his favour  Though he has not won a single set against the Spaniard in his 12 career matches, the Swiss player has gone to a tiebreaker in three of the last four games between the two.

If Nadal wins the final, he will become only the third man in history of tennis to have have won 14 Grand Slam titles, after Pete Sampras and Roger Federer (though Federer has gone ahead and won three more Grand Slam titles). Nadal if wins will also become the first man in the open era, and just the third ever – after the legendary Rod Laver and Roy Emerson – to win each Grand Slam title twice.

Now what are the prospects of Nadal's winning? Well only a miracle can stop him from being crowned. However, it may be added that Nadal has horrible blisters on his hands which require extensive taping before each match. But despite this he puts his opponents through agonising pain and wears them down by driving his opponent into the corners of the court.

So if Wawrinka is to have any chance, he has to be the front-runner.  A fast start is crucial, and he must win the first set.

Easier said than done. So let us watch the match on Sunday morning and see if Nadal can make history or Wawrinka stands in his way.

The final of the Australian Open (men's singles) is being played between Nadal - Wawrinka on 26 January 2014 at Approximately* 08:30 GMT at Rod Laver Arena
