Serena outclasses Czech Safarova to claim Charleston Family Circle Club crown

It is all over at Charleston - As expected the fifth seeded American Serena Williams outclassed her Czech opponent 9th seeded Lucia Safarova in straight sets Sunday and claim the Charleston Family Circle Club crown for herself.

She beat Safarova 6-0, 6-1 on the Charleston's green clay courts in just 58 minutes.

“I have to say, this is probably the best match I’ve played in my career, either in a long time or it’s up there in the top five,” Serena said after the match.

Sunday's win is Serena's first WTA win since she turned 30 last September. The win also makes her the second 30 year old since Navratilova (1990) tohave won at Charelston.

Finally the third major event of the year Charleston Family Circle Cup for ladies is also coming to an end Sunday evening when Serena William faces Lucie Safarova.

In the semi final, William had an easy going with second seed Australian Samantha Stosur and she finished the game just two minutes short of an hour, beating Stosur 6-1, 6-1.

The other semi final was also a straight one hour run (64 minutes to be exact) for 9th seeded Czech Safarova and she  double bagled 14th seeded Slovakian Polona Hercog with much ease 6-0, 6-0.

So in both cases the score was almost similar - but this brings Safarova, the otherwise underdog og the tournament, face to face with World Number 5. Both William and Safarova have four head to head encounters before, but William has a clear cut winning edge of 4-0 against her Czech opponent this evening.

This makes William the quite obvious favourite and likely winner of the Charleston Family Cricle Club 2012.

Serena moves to Charleston Semi Final - Is Venus following?

Serena, though was otherwise winner in the quarterfinal match today against the German Sabine Lisicki, but her opponent walked off the court in pain due to injury she had in 2010, when Serena was leading first set by 5-1. This may be a fatal blow to the German and her tennis career.

In the meantime, her younger sister Venus is to face Australian second seed Samantha Stosur in her quarterfinal duel - and may even win over her and face her sister in the semi final at Charleston.

In the other two quarters finals, Zvonareva of Russia plays against Czech Safarova and Slovenia's Polona plays against Russian Nadia Petrova.

William Sisters Advance into Charleston

Thursday, both younger and elder William sisters had their matches at Charleston and both had easy run over their opponents and now march on with eyes set on the title.

Fifth seed Serena, the 2008 Charleston champion, is seen at her best. She overpowering New Zealand's Marina Erakovic 6-2, 6-2 on Thursday to reach the quarterfinals of the WTA's green clay Charleston tournament. 

Serena's sister and World No. 87 Venus, who returned to the tour last month in Miami after being out seven months due to illness, ousted Australian A. Rodionova 7-5, 6-2 in Thursday 3rd match.

Seven-time Grand Slam champion Venus is fresh off an impressive comeback showing in Miami, where she won her first four matches of her return.

And do you know why the William sister did not play in the Indian Wells? Because of a boycott that began in 2001 when fans booed them.

World Number 45 Marina is straight seven years younger to aging Big Sister, who ranks World Number 10. Both have commendable track record as Erakovic has lost only three of the last ten matches played since early this year, while Serena has lost only two of her last ten matches . 

Both have not played against each other earlier. So this evening, their duel will draw sizeable crowd to see how the two face and fare against each other.

World Number 87 Venus Williams of USA meets world Number 98 Anastasia Rodionova, Russian born  Australian this eveing at Charleston in the third round match.

Both have met only once at San Diego, USA in 2007, in which Venus beat Rodionova in straight sets 6-3, 6-0. But wasn't that to long ago?

Venus who after an absence of almost seven months, when She withdrew from last year's US Open after being diagnosed with a fatigue-causing autoimmune disease, appeared at Miami, though with a moderate performance, has seven out of ten matches she played since 2011. As for Rodionova, she has lost four times in her last ten matches since earlier this year.

Both seem eager to sail on and cash on every moment and ball to win over their opponenets. While Venus finds playing on clay pleasurable and easy, but it is her first clay court appearance after months. But it would be her endeavour to have her ranking improved so she can qualify for the London Olympics this summer.

So let us see who moves forward as presently both are aspirant of moving forward - with only drawback for Venus that she hadn't played for almost seven months recently.

Venus sails smoothly at Charleston

Venus Williams, though could not shine in Miami, is doing fine in the Family Circle Cup in Charleston.

The American, has been out of international tennis for almost seven months, till she came to Miami. Williams had fallen to 87th in the world after missing more than six months because of a fatigue-causing autoimmune disease. Although it is taking her time to get settled, she now seems at ease at Charleston.

Although, she has had an easy win over   Jelena Jankovic 7-5, 6-0 at the Family Circle Cup on Wednesday, it remains to be seen whether she cruises well too in her matches ahead or otherwise. 

Radwanska pulls out of Charleston

Agnieszka Radwanska has withdrawn from the WTA event in Charleston with injury, just days after winning the biggest title of her career in Miami.

The 23-year-old Pole beat world number two Maria Sharapova to lift the prestigious Sony Ericsson Open title on Saturday but has been forced out of her next scheduled outing with a back problem.

“While I am excited that I won the Sony Ericsson Open I am disappointed that I have to withdraw from the Family Circle Cup in Charleston,” Radwanska said.
