Manchester City eye Premier League victory with 2-1 win over United

It is finally over - the much talked about the Battle of Manchesters or the Manchester Derby came to an end Monday night at the Etihad Stadium, Manchester.

Manchester City took a huge step towards the Premier League title as they beat bitter city rivals Manchester United 1-0 on Monday with a first-half goal by Vincent Kompany.

Vincent Kompany’s powerful header sealed a 1-0 win for Manchester City over title rivals Manchester United on Monday to put Roberto Mancini’s side within two victories of Premier League glory.

The Belgian defender rose unmarked just before halftime at the Etihad Stadium to settle a compelling and frantic derby that lacked quality but more than made up for that in tension.

United could not respond as City moved above their neighbours on goal difference with a match at Newcastle United and a home game with strugglers Queen Park Rangers to come.

Both sides have 83 points, with City having a superior goal difference of eight, and the momentum is now with Roberto Mancini’s side who have clawed back an eight-point deficit since Easter to move within sight of their first English title since 1968.

Poll of the day: Who will win the Manchester derby?

If Sir Alex Ferguson's side take all three points they can all-but guarantee a record 20th league title, whereas a win for Roberto Mancini's side will take them top as they bid for their first top-flight title since 1968.

City seemed to be running away with the league earlier this season, and at one stage held an eight-point gap over United.

That lead was eroded as Sir Alex's side went on a run of 12 games unbeaten, and eventually took a five point gap of their own. That lead is now down to three points, with a resurgent City side (led by former United player Carlos Tevez) putting down a marker with a 6-1 win against Norwich two weeks ago.

With form supposedly 'going out the window' in games such as these, it is a tight one to call, so who do you think will win?
