Chanderpaul should emulate Dravid and put team above self

Brian Lara is right. As a batsman with 140 Tests and more than 10,000 runs at an average of over 50, Shivnarine Chanderpaul has to bat at No 3 for the West Indies. His continued refusal to do so smacks of self-interest and is a serious disservice to his inexperienced team mates.

There’s no doubting Chanderpaul’s qualities to stick around and bat with the tail, but West Indies need far more than that from their premier batsman. Chanderpaul needs to shape innings, not continually try and revive them by walking to the crease with his side three wickets down for not a lot.

Rahul Dravid retires from domestic and international cricket

India's ace cricketer, Rahul Dravid on Friday announced his retirement from domestic and international cricket. "I would like to announce my retirement from domestic and international cricket," he said. BCCI president N Srinivasan and cricketer Anil Kumble looked on as The Wall thanked various captains played under, the teams as well as his support staff.

"I would like to thank the Indian fans, both here and around the world. I would also like to thank the selectors, who rarely get any mention for their support."

However, he will continue to play in the lucrative Twenty20 India Premier League, where he will lead Rajasthan Royals, replacing the retired Shane Warne as the captain of the franchise.

Protect Test cricket - Dravid

Indian batting great Rahul Dravid has urged administrators to cut "meaningless" one-day cricket matches and work harder to win back fans to Tests, which he said remain the "gold standard" for players, at Sydney, Australia.

Dravid also cautioned against the menace of match-fixing while delivering the Sir Donald Bradman Oration at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra on Wednesday night.

"Cricket must find a middle path," he said. "It must scale down this mad merry-go-round that teams and players find themselves in - heading off for two-Test tours and seven-match ODI series with a few Twenty20s thrown in."
