Nigeria is Afcon Champion for the third time

Sunday night saw Nigerians rising to the occasion and clinching the Africa Cup of Nations trophy for the third time at the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg, South Africa.

The lone goal of the match came in the 40th minute when Mba clipped the ball over Mohamed Koffi and then volleyed into the far corner.

However, the Burkina Faso team was not letting the victory go to Nigerians so easy as they almost equalized when Wilfried Sanou forced a fingertip save from goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama. Ahmed Musa slipped as he looked set to score and Victor Moses almost poked home as Nigeria eased to victory.

Nigeria's lone goal victory over the underdogs Burkina Faso is certainly not impressive as Nigeria with already two trophies up its sleeve, should have fared much better and won with a greater margin of victory rather than the lone goal by Mba.

However, credit must go to Nigeria and their coach Stephen Keshi, who captained the Super Eagles when they last won the title in 1994 and becomes only the second man to lift the trophy as a player and as a coach after Egyptian Mahmoud El Gohary.

It is also the first time for 21 years that a black African coach has won the cup - Ivory Coast's Yeo Martial was the last to do so in 1992

Nigeria v Burkina Faso - AFCON Final | Free Streaming Live from FNB Stadium Johannesburg - 10 February

As for Burkina Faso, they are the clear underdogs for Sunday's game which marks their first appearance in a final. So far, their best in the tournament was reaching the semi-finals in 1998 when they were tournament hosts.

Burkaina Faso is lucky to have Pitroipa cleared of the ban and allowed to play in the final. Referee Slim Jdidi admitted that he mistakenly issued the winger with a second yellow card for simulation in the semi-final against Ghana.

So who lifts the Afcon trophy? Well Nigeria remains the hot favourite - but sometimes underdogs play better when at odds and surprise everyone. Don'y to you think so?

Nigeria and Mali head-to-head at Africa Cup of Nations Semi Finals | Free Live Streaming - 6 February

The Africa Cup of Nations enters its last stage of semis and Wednesday today will be decided which two teams finally move over the the final to be played on 10th February to lift the Africa Cup of Nations trophy for 2013.

The first semi final is being played between Mali and Nigeria at Moses Mabhida Stadium — Durban.

In the matches played so far the Mali football team has exhibited themselves as a strong team - something that the Nigerians  cannot afford to be complacent if they are to reach the final.

However, Mali were third place finishers last year in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea, but their record against Nigeria does not look good. In their last four Afcon encounters, Nigeria has prevailed on two occasions and drawn the other two.

At the same time, Mali which is politically embroiled into a almost civil war, would very much like to win the cup to show their strength in the testing time of their history.

Who moves to the final - will be decided today. But the history tells that Nigeria has played in the final of the Nations Cup six times and won the trophy on two occasions - in 1980 and 1994, while Mali played in the final of the Afcon in 1972, but lost 3-2 against Congo in the tournament hosted in Cameroon.
