After Sunday's Wimbledon final, who would not know who Roger Federer is. The Swiss who played for a dream, which came true when he beat the darling of the Londoners, world number four and British no.1 Andy Murray in the final of the gentlemen's single title event at the Centre Court 4-6, 7-5, 6-3, 6-4.

Elevated from no.3 to World no.1 after Sunday's final win, Swiss Roger Federer equaled the seven times win record of British William Renshaw and American Pete Sempras.

His 8th Wimbledon final and seventh win left Andy Murray tearful for he was playing his maiden final and had hoped to win not only for himself, but for his country as well to bring an end to a title-less drought Britain has been suffering since Fred Perry won the last Wimbledon title in 1936.

Interestingly, Sunday's final was the first final when the Centre Court  £80 million roof was deployed since it was placed in 2009.

Roger federer, a born Leo (8 August 1981) is a professional tennis player from Switzerland. He had previously held the world no.1 ranking from 2004 - 2008, for full 237 weeks consecutively. However, his overall holding record comes to 286 weeks, a few days short of american Pete Sempras, which will expire on 16 July 2012 a few days from hence.

Roger Federer, after Wimbledon 2012 Grand Slam win, now has 17 Grand Slams to his honour. The win Sunday comes as a big relief for Federer as he has been without a Grand Slam title since his 16th Grand Slam title of Australian Open 2012 - in fact he had been dominated by Serbian Djokovic and Spaniard Rafael Nadal, both of whom crashed out of the Wimbledon this year. His rivalries with the two are considered as some of the greatest of all time in the sport and are even considered to be a "Trivalry" between the three.

Roger Federer has many feathers in his cap:  He topped a list of the "100 greatest tennis players of all time" (male or female) by Tennis Channel recently in 2012.  He is one of seven male players to capture the career Grand Slam (one of four in the Open Era) and one of three (with Andre Agassi and Rafael Nadal) to do so on three different surfaces (clay, grass, and hard courts). He is the only male player in tennis history to have reached the title match of each Grand Slam tournament at least five times, and is also the only male tennis player to have reached the Wimbledon final eight times.

Five year older to Djokovic and Murray, whom he beat in the semi and final this year, Federer should now aim to win the Wimbledon for the eighth time next year, breaking the records of William Renshaw and Pete Sempras, and set in a new world record as no one has held the Wimbledon title for more than seven times before.

Along with Federer, American Serena Williams who also won the Wimbledon title this year has a reason to be jubilant as she also won the Wimbledon Ladies' Single title for the fifth time, equaling record held by many including her sister Venus, from who she clinched the title in 2008 and held till 2010.

Wimbledon this year is into history making: In the Ladies's Singles title between Radwanksa and Serena Williams, being played Saturday afternoon, Serena is eyeing the title for the fifth time, while Radwanska is eyeing her maiden Wimbledon title this year and her country since 1939.

World no. 3 Swiss Roger Federer, who beat defending champion and world no.1 Novak Djokovic in the semi final, Friday marches into the Centre Court of Wimbledon on Sunday 8 July to for the eighth time to win the title for the seventh time and equal the record already held by British William Renshaw and American Pete Sempras.

British no.1 and world no.4 Andy Murray makes his maiden entry into the Wimbledon final and meets Federer to clinch the title and become first British to do so in 74 years since Bunny Austin in 1938.

Murray and Federer have known each other fifteen times since 2005, when they first played each other in Bangkok. Since then they have come a long way with Murray winning over the Swiss eight times. But despite the odds, Federer is being dubbed as a hot favourite to win the title despite being six years elder to Murray for his consistency, grip over the game and resolve. However, Murray has spark and power - and this brings two players facing each other: one with experience, the other with strength and support of home crowd.

Who wins? Well I keep my fingers crossed till the match ends this Sunday.

Can Federer win Wimbledon for the Seventh Time?

From Monday today, the Wimbledon gets going with the start of its first round of matches. In today's matches, two leading tennis star figure out: World no.1 and the defending champion Novak Djokovic and world no.3 Swiss Roger Federer.

Djokovic, after losing a life time opportunity at Roland Garros at the hands of Spaniard Rafael Nadal to hold all four Grand Slam titles and equally a record last set 43 years ago by Australian Rod Laver in 1969, will be looking forward to at least defend his title at Wimbledon and start over afresh. 

But there is Roger Federer, who feels he has been sidelined by both Djokovic and Nadal and has been denied of winning any Grand Slam in this year. He also failed to win over the Halle title for the record sixth time and was beaten by 50th ranked German Tommy Haas.

Now the Swiss is eyeing the Wimbledon title this year for a record seventh time. So far only two players have had this honour: William Renshaw and Pete Sampras. Federer who has already won the Wimbledon title six times, is now eyeing to equal the record of Renshaw and Sempras this year. But the  big question is: Can he do it?

Well for aging Federer it may not be possible. This August, the Swiss will be 31 - three years elder to Sempras when he won his seventh and last Wimbledon title. His two opponents who can threaten his dreams are none other than Serbian Djokovic who is still 25, and Nadal who is 26. Playing against payers 5-6 years younger is no joke. It would require mustering all his strength to do so - something which he has not been able to do so at leas this year. Failing at Halle against a much lower ranking player, and that too on grass which is favourite of Federer, speaks volumes of Federer's fitness.

Federer last won Wimbledon in 2009, that was three years ago. Now three years after, facing much younger players like Djokovic and Nadal who are beaming with energies and carrying one Grand Slam each this year, besides many other smaller titles, Federer will have to think twice matching their abilities and fitness, before embarking upon a strenuous journey ahead.

Only a miracle and great setbacks for Djokovic and Nadal may take Federer to the Centre Court on the final day - but that day is too far away as Wimbledon gets going Monday today. Won't you say so?
