Team GB [W] beat Kiwis 1-0 in Opening Olympic Group Match

The Great Britain women's football team kicked off the 2012 Olympics with a hard-fought victory over New Zealand at a sun-soaked Millennium Stadium in Cardiff.

The lone goal was scored by full-back Steph Houghton who converted a free-kick midway through the second half, much to the delight of an enthusiastic crowd of 24,549 in the Welsh capital.

The team GB team celebrated with a group huddle at the final whistle and a lap of the stadium - and they can look forward to the remainder of their Group E campaign, which continues against Cameroon on Saturday.

25th July: London Olympics get underway with Women Soccer

Wednesday 25th July today, two days before the massive opening ceremony of the London Olympics is due, the Olympic games finally get going with the soccer group matches of women teams.

The first match of the day got going between the British and New Zealand women teams at 15:00 GMT at the Millennium Stadium.

The second match of the day between Japan and canada, followed by third match between USA and France, starting 16:00 GMT.

At 17:45 GMT, the match between cameroon and Brazil will commence.

The last two matches of the day will be played between the women teams of Sweden and South Africa, and Colombia vs Korea DRP teams at 18:45 GMT.
