England drops to 17th place in FIFA ranking - while Spain Reins the world

For the first time in 12 years, England has seen itself sinking to 17th place in the FIFA football ranking.

The slippage comes despite a quarter-final exit at Euro 2012, Roy Hodgson's side reached third in August last year - an all-time high.

Spain - which won the last two European Championships and the 2010 World Cup - has now held top spot in the table since September 2011, while Argentina moved up two places to second.

One new comer in the top 10 slot is Uruguay which has jumped into the top 10 after rising five positions to seventh.

Belgium's rise continued as they moved up to sixth - a four-place improvement - but the biggest climbers of all inside the top 20 were the USA, who leapt from 19th to 13th.

The FIFA world ranking of the top 10 teams is now as under:

Azarenka may lose no.1 ranking as Serena Williams closes in at Doha

Victoria Azarenka, the  reining world no.1 for the last one year may feel threatened as American Serena Williams is fast closing in and is just few points behind to take over the honour from Azarenka.

Victoria Azarenka from Belarus currently stands at world no.1 with 10,325 points, while the Serena Williams, currently world no.2, has 9,970 points - a difference of just 355 points.

After winning over the Russian lucky loser Daria Gavrilova 6-2, 6-1, Serena just needs to win two more matches this week to ensure she moves to the top of the world rankings on Monday.

Close by Serena at world no.3 is Russian Maria Sharapova with 9, 545 points, who is also doing good so far, winning all her matches so far. However she is likely to remain at no.3 slot even after Serena climbs to the top of the world. Sharapova has not been winning lately and she needs to work harder to remain in the run. Sharapova improved to a perfect 10-0 in Doha lifetime.

Andy Murray predicts end of world top four dominance at majors

Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer have dominated the slams, winning 28 of the last 29 between them, with Juan Martin del Potro the only other man to have won one in that time.

But Nadal's shock second-round Wimbledon loss to unheralded Lukas Rosol ensured whoever reaches the final from the bottom half of the draw will do so for the first time.

That could be Murray, of course, and he would not be surprised if there were a few more shocks, although he stopped short of agreeing with Federer that Nadal's loss was a good thing for the sport.

"A lot of people have said to me that the quality of matches at the end of the grand slams have been unbelievable the last few years," Murray said
