Euro 2012: England and France into last Eight

England beat Ukraine with a lone goal in their Group D match to make a space for them in the last eight at Euro 2012. The English team, on which many had reservations as being the poorest squad ever fielded, has done well by their unbeaten run to five games.

After the win, a proud England captain Steven Gerrard boasted: "No-one believed in us at the start, but we're gaining momentum at the right time."

England now plays its quarter-final with Italy in Kiev on Sunday.

As for France, while it was outplayed by the Swedes 0-2, it still managed a place in the quarters. In fact, France's 23-game unbeaten streak came to a crashing end as the already-eliminated Swedes neutralized the dual attacking threat of Karim Benzema and Franck Ribery.

The Swedes were both sad and happy after the match - sad for being halted in their tracks as France moves on to quarters, and happy for beating the French with clear 2-0 victory. But there are times and other places in futre for better times.
