Vettel fastest in second practice at F1 Indian GP

Sebastian Vettel showed he has the pace to win a fourth straight Formula One race and pad his thin championship lead by setting the fastest time in Friday’s practices for the Indian Grand Prix.
Vettel headed a Red Bull one-two in the second practice, with teammate Mark Webber a tenth of a second behind.
Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso — Vettel’s title rival, just six points behind — was third fastest, six-tenths off the pace.
Red Bull locked out the front row in qualifying for the previous two races and the times here indicate a hat trick is in the offing.

The Hungary Grand Prix Formula 1 gets underway Sunday, 29 July today at  Mogyoród near Hungarian capital Budapest.

The Hungaroring is the home of Hungarian motorsport. Besides Formula One, it has also hosted DTM and FIA GT Championship races. In 2011, it hosted the inaugural FIA WTCC Race of Hungary. A public drag race event takes place every month.

As already reported, Lewis Hamilton has secured a strong position for himself as he took the pole position saturday. With qualifying more important at the Hungaroring than at most circuits on the calendar, Hamilton will be confident of converting his pole into his second victory of the season on Sunday.

As for the Red Bull, they are in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons. Just days after the FIA changed the rules on engine mapping to prevent Red Bull aiding their cornering performance and tire wear.

The race is scheduled for Sunday, 29 July 2012 at 12:00 GMT

Chaos at British Grand Prix despite £40m face-lift - and scooter for Mark Webber

It was fine for the British Racing Drivers’ Club man under his plastic canopy. He was steering a buggy that took the blazers, their wives and families, friends and other assorted liggers from a  sodden car park to the  sanctuary of the club house.

Stop to ask the driver - waiting and empty at the front of his articulated carriage — if he would kindly give you a lift and he would decline. You may have paid £155 for the privilege of getting soaked to the bone but a helping hand from the hosts was beyond his generosity.

The helicopter that was due to bring in Mark Webber, the Red Bull driver who lives in nearby Aston Clinton, could not take off, so a scooter was sent out to enable him to weave through the queues. He arrived in his race overalls, ready for action.

Meanwhile, in Silverstone’s  mission control with its myriad  televisions, you could watch  Wimbledon. Federer was breaking Djokovic in the fourth set on one screen and the punters were bumper to bumper on another. Strawberries and cream, anyone?

A McLaren spokesman said the Woking team were ready to lend a hand in replacing whatever damaged equipment Williams might need to go racing in Monaco next week.

The blaze erupted after team members had gathered in front of the Circuit de Catalunya garage for a victory photograph with their Venezuelan driver.

Team founder Frank Williams, who is in a wheelchair, was hurriedly pushed to safety while Maldonado carried a 12-year-old cousin - who had an injured foot - on his back along the smoke-filled pit lane.
