Africa Cup of Nations 2013 begins Today - 19th January


While there is already so much going on in the month of January as for sports is concerned, we have yet another major event kicking of Saturday, 19 January 2013 today - the Africa Cup of Nations. The tournament will terminate 10th of February next month.


The Africa Cup of Nations, also referred to as the African Cup of Nations or African Nations Cup, officially CAN (French for Coupe d'Afrique des Nations), is held after two years and from 2013, the tournament will switch to being held in odd-numbered years so that it does not clash with the FIFA World Cup.

Originally Libya won the right to host the tournament - however, due to the Libyan civil war, Libya traded years with South Africa, so that South Africa is hosting in 2013 and Libya will be hosting in 2017.

The winner of the tournament will qualify for the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup in Brazil as the representative from CAF.

A total of 16 teams will be participating in the Cup. These 16 teams have been divided into a pot of for teams each, based on their ranking, as under:


However, for the purpose of matches, these have been divided into four groups as under:


On the opening day, that is 190th January, two matches of Group A will be played as under:
South Africa vs cape Verde
Angola vs Morocco

It may be added that the current champion of the Africa Cup of Nations is Zambia. However, the most titles won by a single country is seven times by Egypt.
