India bowler Sreesanth charged over cricket spot-fixing

The menace of match fixing or spot fixing is really plaguing the once gentleman's game of cricket. Every now and then news of such misdeeds surface leaving a rather bad taste- specially when it involves seasoned and ace cricketers.

Now in a sensational cricket scandal  Indian cricketer S Sreesanth has been charged with 38 other people over a spot-fixing scandal that has rocked the Indian Premier League. They were arrested in May along with scores of bookmakers.

However, Sreesanth and team-mates Ajit Chandila and Ankeet Chavan deny the charges.

Prosecutors brought charges of criminal conspiracy and cheating against Sreesanth, two of his Rajasthan Royals team-mates, and other non-cricketers.

Champions League tie played in England 'was fixed' - alleges Europol

While cricket generally comes under lot of criticim for match fixing charges - but a new pandora box has now opened bring footbal match fixing out of it.

It has been alleged that Champions League tie played in England is one of 680 matches across the world investigators say was fixed. Besides, some 425 match officials, club officials, players and criminals are suspected of being involved.

The claims have been made by the Europol in a news conference held in The Hague, Netherlands.

European police did not reveal the identity of the match they believe was corrupt in England.

But Europol did say that they had uncovered an organised crime syndicate based in Asia that was co-ordinating the operation.

Other than Champions League, in Germany-based matches alone, criminals wagered £13.8m (16m euros) on rigged matches and made £6.9m in profits. Officials fear this is as the "tip of the iceberg."

However, it seems that neither FIFA nor UEFA were taken into confidence while initiating such an inquiry by Europol.

A spokesman for The FA said it was "not aware of any credible reports into suspicious Champions League fixtures in England, nor has any information been shared with us.

13 face life-ban for Zimbabwe match-fixing

A Zimbabwean probe has recommended life bans for 13 national footballers and officials implicated in a 2009 match-fixing scam in Asia, according to a report released Tuesday.

Although the probe team did not name the players and officials in the report, it further recommended a 10-year ban for seven people, a five-year ban for 37, two-year bans for 25 people and one to two-year bans for 10 players while eight players were exonerated.

"Some officials and players will undoubtedly have their football futures ruined by these greedy, despicable, ruthless and unfeeling miscreants," said retired high court judge and investigating team head Ahmed Ebrahim after the 13 were found guilty.

Investigation of badminton coaches in match-throwing scandal - demand IOC

The International Olympic Committee demanded a probe into the coaches of eight disqualified players, dashing world badminton's hopes of drawing a line under a match-throwing scandal that has damaged the sport's credibility at the London Games.

The Badminton World Federation (BWF) also said it would review video of all round-robin matches at the Olympic tournament, after competing teams slammed the format as ripe for manipulation. The investigations overshadowed spirited competition on Day Six at Wembley Arena, with players contesting furiously to qualify for the medal rounds.

The International Olympic Committee asked China, South Korea and Indonesia's national delegations to probe the entourages of the four women's doubles pairs who, in farcical scenes on Tuesday, tried to lose their matches to secure an easier run through the knockout rounds.
