Brazil strips Japan 3-0 in Confederations Cup Opener

The opening match of the Confederations Cup Saturday night turned out to be a one sided show as the host Brazil did not allow their Japanese opponent to come near their goal post.

Neymar celebrates his 3rd minute goal over Japan [Getty Images]
It was 21 years old Neymar who scored the first goal right in the third minute that took the Japanese by surprise - from which they could never recover throughout the remaining game. Neymar scored with a firm shot from outside the penalty area, connecting with the ball after Fred controlled a long cross from Marcelo with his chest. The ball bounced only once before Neymar fired it into the top corner.

It was Paulinho who scored another goal after the half time in the 48th minute to scare away their opponents. However, it was Jo who sealed the Brazilian victory in the 90th minutes third goal.

The win puts Brazil at the top of Group A with three points. Italy and Mexico will play in the other group match on Sunday.

The game was the first international match to use goal-line technology, but it was not needed for any decisions.

Renowned Japaenese Wrestler Anoki in Pakistan: Delivers message of peace

Japan’s renowned wrestler Anoki and his fellow grapplers will illuminate the National Hockey Stadium in Lahore with their fights on Sunday evening in connection with the celebrations of the 60 years diplomatic relations between Pakistan and Japan, writes Alam Zeb Safi.

The wrestling legend, who is now called Mohammad Hussain Anoki after embracing Islam, has come to Lahore along with a dozen of Japanese wrestlers. His visit aims giving a message of peace to the world with the exhibition fights. He announced at a press conference that he was told by people not to go to Pakistan but he was adamant to come as he wanted to see the ground realities about a country that is haunted by terrorism.

In the past, Anoki had twice visited Pakistan in 1976 and 1986. In 1976 he defeated Akram Pahalawan while in 1986 he tasted defeat at the hands of Jhara.

Famous Akki - Anoki fight 1976
It may be recalled that Inoki took on Pakistan's Akram Pahalwan alias Akki in 1976, whom he considered one of the two true representatives of the MMA fighting style, the other being Muhammad Ali, fought earlier. Inoki defeated Akram through a submission hold, chicken wing armlock. Although Akram didn't submit, but the referee stopped the match because Akram's left arm broke under the submission hold.
Anoki also visited the tombs of Akram Pahalwan and Jhara Pahalawan on Saturday. He adopted the 13-year old nephew of Jhara Pahlawan and said he would meet all his expenses of his free-style wrestling training at his own academy in Japan.

Anoki also announced to establish an academy in Lahore with the collaboration of the Sports Board Punjab where Pakistan’s cream wrestlers will be imparted training in free-style wrestling.

Former Japanese wrestler 'Inoki' to participate in Pakistan’s Sports & Peace Festival

Many many years ago, Antonio Inoki made headlines both in Pakistan and Japan when he wrestled with a Pakistani wrestler  in the 70s. Now the Pakistan's wrestling fans get a chance to see Mr Inoki and his team participating in a wrestling-show, part of the Pakistan‘s Sports and Peace Festival being held next month.

December 2nd marks the start of Pakistan‘s Sports and Peace Festival, with a special event dedicated to freestyle wrestling to be held at the Lahore’s National Hockey Stadium. One of the biggest draws is expected to be wrestling legend and martial arts expert Antonio Inoki, joined by a team of ten other Japanese wrestlers. In addition to the wrestlers from Japan, there will three Russians and two Americans also participating.

Chairman of the organizing sports committee says that Pakistan doesn't have much experience with freestyle wrestling, but the sport’s popularity is increasing with Nasir Bhollu, considered the pride of the country. While no one else in Pakistan is able to match Nasir, the country still needs exposure other styles of wrestling, and because of enthusiasm from groups like the Punjab Youth Festival, more foreign teams have begun to make visits.

Among the prominent Japanese wrestlers will be Kazuyuki Fujita, Hideki Suzuki, Shinichi Suzukawa, Atsushi Sawada, and Yoshihiro Asai. And a special wrestling ring is being flown from Japan to Pakistan just for the event. The National Hockey Stadium is being converted, allowing bouts to be held under the lights in a traditional way the sport is enjoyed. In combination with a recent exhibition of traditional Japanese martial arts in the country, it seem Pakistan is developing quite a strong interest in Japan’s cultural exports.

Arsenal's Park Chu-Young set them on their way with a superb solo effort in the 38th minute before skipper Koo Ja-Cheol sealed the win 11 minutes into the second half.

Japan enjoyed plenty of possession but, like Great Britain before them, found it tough to break down a well-organised Korean rearguard.

Watch Live Japan and South Korea playing for Olympic Football Bronze | 10 August 2012

Japan and South Korea come face to face Friday evening at London Olympics 2012 to win over each other to bag the Olympics Bronze.

It may be added for information that Barazil and Mexico have already qualified for the Olympics football final, being played Saturday, 11 August 2012.

Japan has already owon the Olympic bronze once - but that was way back in 1968. South Korea has yet to bag any medal in Olympics football. This measn that both teams are already new in the bronze medal queue as 1968 is almost history now for Japan.

Japan's football team has a higher ranking than their rival Friday in FIFA and their strong defence did not let them have a goal scored against them till the semis. So it would be worth watching who outscore the other to win over the Olympic bronze Friday evening at London Olympics.

But wait - there is one more hidden prize for the South Korean footballers: if they win the bronze, they will be exempted from the compulsory military service that each South Korean must do til the age of 29. So I do not have to say which team will be putting in their extra power and enter the field Friday evening with full turbo booster charges on.

The match is scheduled for Friday 10 August 2012 at 18:40 GMT

Olympics Football: Brazil to play Mexico for a possible Gold Saturday

Brazil's dream of winning an elusive Olympic soccer gold came a step closer when they thrashed South Korea 3-0 in the semifinals at Old Trafford on Tuesday.

The victory sets up a title decider against Mexico at Wembley Stadium on Saturday after the Mexicans beat Japan 3-1 in the earlier last four clash.

Brazil, whose obsession with winning gold is matched by few other countries, won with second-half goals from forward Leandro Damiao, now tournament top scorer with six, after a 38th minute opener from Romulo in front of a 69,389 crowd.

Korea now face Japan in what is likely to be a lively battle for the bronze medal at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium on Friday while Brazil will hope to be crowned Olympic champions at last against Mexico on Saturday.

It may be added that the Japanese have not conceded a single goal during their journey to the semis. They took the tournament by surprise by beating Spain in the first group stage match, and have carried that momentum on.

As for Mexico, they have had a tough time beating the strong Senegalese footballers 4-2 in the extra time, with ten minutes remaining.

For today's match, Mexico could use its creative ability in midfield to have an upper edge over the Japanese.

Japan Inquiry Shakes Up Men's Team Medal Standings in Olympic Gymnastics

The Chinese won their second straight Olympic title in men's gymnastics and third and in four games in a rout Monday, making fools of everyone who wrote them off after a dismal performance in qualifying.
"We don't have any faults. That's our secret to beat the Japanese and to beat everyone," Zhang Chenglong said. "In preliminaries, we had a little bit of faults. But tonight was completely perfect."
But , it took five minutes and a video review to sort out the silver and bronze medalists after Japan questioned the score of three-time world champion Kohei Uchimura on pommel horse, the last routine. Japan jumped from fourth to second after judges revised Uchimura's score, bumping Britain down to bronze and Ukraine off the medals podium.

London Olympics: Spain lose 0-1 to Japan

The world and European champions Spaniards may have never dreamt of losing to Japan - but that was the reality Thursday, when a lone goal by  Yuki Otsu hurt the Spaniard badly in the series of group matches.

Japan's Yuki Otsu beat the Spanish goalkeeper David de Gea with a strike in 33 minutes before Inigo Dominguez picked up a straight red card for a foul on Kensuke Nagai nine minutes later at Glasgow's Hampden Park.

Spain's next match is against Honduras on Sunday, before they play Morocco on Wednesday. Morocco had a draw of 2-2 with Honduras in their first match Thursday.

Spain is a big name in football, but the Japanese are also hard nut to crack. Spain, however, is a favourite unless a surprise is waiting for them today. Spain have won two Euro titles (2008 and 2012), a World Cup (2010) and the UEFA Under-21 championship (2011).

Spain has a gold medal at Barcelona Olympics and will definitely like to win another this time too.
