Germany defends Olympic hockey gold - beat Holland 2-1

Germany successfully defended their Olympic hockey title when they beat Holland 2-1 in  a thrilling and exciting Olympic men's field hockey final Staurday night.

Both goals were scored by Jan Philipp Rabente, who thus denied the Dutch their dream of becoming the first nation to win both hockey golds at the same Games.

It may be added that Holland had a smooth sailing in the group matches and even beat Germany and they were hoping to snatch the gold from defending chmapions Germany this time.

The defeat thus equalises the Dutch's earlier edge over the Germans and let the Germans ge away with their second successive Olympic gold.

Mexico humiliated hot favourites Brazil to win the men's Olympic football tournament for the first time at Wembley, London.

Mexico outscored champions of the champions Brazil 2-1, when the Brazilians were just thinking that they would just brush aside the Mexicans to win the gold. But they were really stunned to settle for the silver.

Although it was the first time for Brazil too to win the Olympic gold, but they were simply outclassed as the Mexicans edged over the Brazilians to win their first gold in Olympic football. Both goals were scored by Oribe Peralta.

Serena wins Olympics gold for America

In what seemed to be one of the extremely one sided final of all times, world no.4 and five times Wimbledon champion American Serena Williams outclassed her Russian opponent and world no.3 Maria Sharapova 6-0, 6-1 to win the gold for America at the Centre Court of Wimbledon Saturday afternoon.

Right from the outset, it seemed that the Russian, who recently won the French Open but crashed out of Wimbledon in the very early stage, wasn't interested in winning the match and threw away the first set for naught. Even in the second set, she did not seem to be recovering from her first set defeat and coming back to game and lost the second set just too easily 6-1 and the gold too.

Serena was obviously overjoyed who jumped and danced like a little girl for winning the gold for her country. This was the 23rd gold that America won.

In fact, right from the first round and specially from the quarters onward, Serena overpowered some of the world's best players. She beat Caroline Wozniacki 6-0, 6-3, followed by the world no.1 Victoria Azarenka, 6-1, 6-2.  And now world no.3 and French Open queen maria Sharapova 6-0, 6-1. And just have a look at the scores of all these three matches - in no match she allowed her opponents to be of any threat to her on her way to win the gold.

Serena now eyes another gold of the ladies doubles along with her sister. Both sisters have won golds for America in ladies doubles in Olympics 2000 and 2008.

As for tennis, it looked as if Murray brothers  were not playing for gold, but defeat still hurt for Andy and Jamie Murray as they lost on the grass of Wimbledon in the first round of the Olympic men's doubles.

In a very tight battle with Austria's Jurgen Melzer and Alexander Peya they went down 5-7, 7-6 (8/6), 7-5 after two hours and 23 minutes.

And then, much touted Mark Cavendish failed to challenge in the men's cycling road race and - along with teammates Bradley Wiggins, Chris Froome, David Millar and Ian Stannard - finished way out of contention.
