Pakistan Hockey Team Fails to Qualify for World Cup for the First Time Since 1971

South Koreans rejoice on their semi final win against Pakistan at Ipoh [Photo]
It was the darkest day of Pakistan's hockey history when its national team failed to qualify for the hockey world Cup 2014 since it was instituted in 1971.

Pakistan Hockey which once had the singular honour of holding all hocey titiles, including the Olympics, simultaenously has been in a pretty bad form for the last decade or even more. But losing the bus to World Cup 2014 was a very sad and lamenting day for Pakistan.

It may be added that Pakistan won the inaugural competition in 1971 and triumphed again in 1978, 1982 and 1994.

Pakistan went down 2-1 to South Korea in the Asia Cup semi-final in Malaysia on Friday, a tournament they needed to win to qualify for the 2014 World Cup in the Netherlands.

A strong protest has been launched by the former Olympians and hockey legends in Pakistan who have demanded the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) officials to resign immediately after the disastrous performance in the 9th Asia Cup at Ipoh, Malaysia which deprived Pakistan of qualifying for the World Cup 2014 and let others to handle the hockey affairs to revive the national game in the country.

World record for Pakistan hockey players - Most passes in one minute

The Pakistan Hockey, though has had a miserable spell of defeats at international tournaments, has shown something astonishing that goes down in the book of world records - the Guinnese Book of World Re4cord.

The demo was held at the National Hockey Stadium, Lahore on Tuesday, in which the players gathered 43 passes in one minute and sealing a world record.

Officials representing the Guinness Book of World Record were present on the occasion and confirmed that a world record of most passes in one minute had indeed been made.

Already Sohail Abbas of Pakistan holds the current world record – of 338 goals – for most international goals scored by a player in the history of international field hockey.

So many congrats to Pakistan Hockey - but at the same time a very demoralizing display against India for losing to India 1-3 in the ongoing Azlan Shah Hockey tournament. We wish that this demo that goes down in history books is also demonstrated in international events to revive the glory that was once the special honour of Pakistan Hockey.

Pakistan thrashed by Australia 6-0 in Azlan Shah Cup Hockey

It was a bad day for Pakistan as its cricket and hockey teams fared much below the expectations and were defeated in both sports events miserably.

In the first ODI at South Africa, the hosts beat Pakistan with a large margin of 125 runs.

But it was in the Azlan Shah Cup that Pakistan's hockey team got a thrashing by World champion Australia who won the match 6-0. Australia were 4-0 at half-time

Australia, aiming for a seventh cup title, had little trouble collecting full points to lead the standings after two days. Australia already beat India on Saturday.

After the match, Pakistan's chief coach came with a flimsy justification:
"The players were tired and worn down by the humidity in the Southeast Asian nation. We can only improve, and hopefully the rest day (Monday) will do the team some good."

The match though had a controversial moment when in the dying minutes, the Indian team while contesting a long corner walked off. The Indians while attacking the Pakistani goal missed a chance, but contended that there was enough contact for a penalty corner. The Korean referee though ruled otherwise. After a heated argument, the entire Indian team walked off the turf.

However, the drama soon ended as the Indians returned on to the field shortly afterwards. But Pakistan held on for the remaining couple of moments to clinch the cup.

Netherlands vs Pakistan: Watch Live Free Streaming | Champions Trophy Hockey - Semis: 8 December 2012

Pakistan, which beat Olympic Champions Germany 1-0 in the quarters of the on going Champions Trophy Hockey 2012, meets Netherlands in the semi final at Melbourne Saturday morning today.

The match is crucial for Pakistan to regain its long time lost entry into the final of the Champions Trophy it itself conceived, hosted and won in the hay days. But then drifted away and was lost in obscurity.

Pakistan will have to be very strong in the midfield and stay alert at all times against Netherlands. Today short passes, group attack and skillful conversion of penalty corners would help the Greenshirts to overcome the Dutch team, which is one of the best teams of hockey in the world.

Pakistan’s strikers have to play the way they did against Germany in the quarterfinal. Netherlands also have a good defence line and can be beaten with short passes instead of individual play. The Dutch keeper is one of the best goalkeepers in the world and Pakistan have to be very smart to pass him and that can be done in a group attack.

The match is scheduled for Saturday, 8 2012 at 02:30 GMT at the State Netball Hockey Centre, Melbourne, Australia.

Pakistan bravely loses to Australia 0 -1 | Hockey Champions Trophy 2012

The Champions Trophy pool match between the defending champion Australia and Pakistan today at Melbourne was nothing but a thriller and a fiercely contested match.

Australia, the consecutively three times winner of the Champions Trophy and the present champion, found it extremely difficult to rein in Pakistan in their last pool match today. The first half remained goalless as the hosts could not breakaway the formidable defense of the Greenshirts who also kept the ball most of the time. Both teams missed several chances throughout the first half.

It was only in the second half that the hosts got a plenty corner which was fortunately converted into the only and winning goal of the match by Kieran Govers just twenty minutes befre the end of the match.

Well played Pakistan!!

However, the game for Pakistan is not over as yet as Pakistan plays against Olympic Champions Germany in the quarter finals on Thursday.

Australia vs Pakistan: Watch Live Free Streaming | Champions Trophy Hockey - 4 December 2012

Three times successive Champions Hockey champion Australia meet Pakistan in their last pool match Tuesday morning today at the State Netball Hockey Centre, Melbourne, Australia.

Pakistan's 2-0 win over Belgium should give them much confidence to face the defending champions in their match today. However, they would have to keep pressure on the hosts as they are known for their speed and high velocity game.

Pakistan in their match against Belgium did not earn any pealty corner which is disturbing. Today, the Kookaburras will look to create penalty corners who are extremely efficient with the use of indirect variations. Losing the ball in their own half will create a lot of trouble for Pakistan and Imran’s men should try to keep maximum ball possession.

However, Australia looked a bit rusty when their match with the Netherlands ended in a goal-less draw. This fact may give Pakistan a chance to win the group. Victory against Australia will book Pakistan a top two spot, and perhaps even top of the group.

Being the last day of the pool matches, it will be decided today the quarter-final rivals from the crossover the pool and with Group B wide open, the last eight line-up is less than clear.

The match is scheduled for Tuesday, 4 December 2012 at 08:30 GMT at  the State Netball Hockey Centre, Melbourne, Australia.
