The Points Game and World Ranking at Australian Open

The first Grand Slam of the year, the Australian Open, gets under way from Monday 14th Januray tomorrow and would continue till 27th of January when the Men's Final, the hall mark event of the championship will be decided.

World No.1 Novak Djokovic, who is defending his title has won the Australian Open thrice before and he is all set to clinch the title while playing the final against either world no.2 Roger Federer or world no.3 Andy Murray.

Let us see how would be that world ranking of players be affected after the Australian Open is over.

Presently, Novak Djokovic tops the world ranking with 12,920 points and is defending 2,000 points. If he wins he will have a far greater edge over Roger Federer who has 10,265 point and is defending 720 ponts. On the other hand, Andy Murray has 8,000 points and is defending 720 points. So this means even if Djokovic loses to the two, his world no.1 ranking will remain intact as in case Federer wins, he will amass 10,985 points (1,935 lesser than Djokovic). and as for Murray, if he wins, he will have a total of 8,720 points (4,200 lesser than Djokovic).

So this implies that whether Djokovic wins or loses, he will continue to be world no.1, marginally threatened by Federer (if he wins), but not at all threatened by Murray.

As for the ladies, presently Victoria Azarenka of Belarus is the world no.1 with 10,325 points. Despite her abysmal performance in 2012, her lead over her compatriots was so much that she continued to dominate the tennis world. She is defending 2,000 points and if she wins here, she will amass 12,325 ponts , far greater than Maria Sharapova who is world no.2 with 10,045 points, defending 1,400 points.

But if Sharapova win, she can over take Azarenka 1, 120 points and be no.1 (10,045+ 1,400=11,445). The next in line is Serena Williams with 9, 750 points defending 280 points. There is very likelihood that Serena will win the Australian Open, seeing her recent performance,m form and fitness. In that case, she will have a total of 10,030 points but would still be 15 points lesser than Sharapova and will remain at no.3 till the next tennis event.

So purely going by mathermatics, the status quo is likely to persist even after Australian Open.

But in case of the ladies, there is a likelihood of change over of positions soon after the next competition.

Shanghai Master Djokovic closes the gap on Federer

Novak Djokovic, who won the Shanghai Masters on Sunday, has closed the gap on Roger Federer at the top of the latest ATP rankings, as the Swiss player enters his 300th week as world number one.

The Serb, who beat Britain's Andy Murray 5-7, 7-6 (13/11), 6-3 to take his 13th masters series title, is now just 195 points behind Federer, who was beaten in the semi-final of the tournament, and could even take his position in the coming weeks.

Neither of the players is due to play in the three tournaments scheduled for this week in Moscow, Vienna and Stockholm.

ICC T20I Team and Player Rankings

ICC has announced the team and player rankings for the T20I Wednesday at the end of the group stage of the ICC World Twenty20 Sri Lanka 2012. 

The Team rankings with points scored are:

As for the individual positions both in batting bowling, following positions have been annopunced:

Batsmen:
New Zealand’s wicket-keeper batsman Brendon McCullum has retained his number-one batting spot with Chris Gayle in second place. McCullum’s knock of 123 against Bangladesh, the highest in the history of Twenty20 International cricket to date, has also helped him achieve a career-best rating of 849.

Australia’s Shane Watson has jumped four places to a career-high third position Watson, who won successive Player of the Match awards against Ireland and West Indies, has also garnered his career-best rating of 758. In addition to his batting exploits (92 runs in two games), Watson has continued to retain seventh position in the ICC T20I Player Rankings for bowlers and is also the number-one ranked all-rounder in the world.



The batsmen from Asia have made the most impressive movements in the batting table ahead of the Super Eight stage which starts in Pallekele on 27 September. Sri Lanka’s Kumar Sangakkara has broken back into the top 10 and now sits in eighth position (up by three places). Others to make upward movements are Virat Kohli in 19th (up by 10 places), Rohit Sharma in 26th (up by 12 places), Nasir Jamshed in 32nd (up by 51 places), Shakib Al Hasan in 37th (up by 29 places) and Imran Nazir in 43rd (up by 42 places).

Bowlers: 
In the ICC T20Is Player Rankings for bowlers, New Zealand, South Africa and Sri Lanka boast three bowlers each inside the top 20 while Pakistan has three bowlers inside the top 10 with Saeed Ajmal sitting on top of the tree, followed by Shahid Afridi in fifth (up by one place) and captain Mohammad Hafeez in ninth (up by two place). South Africa’s Dale Steyn has jumped 10 places to claim 11th position, while Harbhajan Singh, who claimed four for 12 against England, India’s best figures in a Twenty20 International, has broken into the top 20 and is now at 17th place (up five).

Bangladesh improves T20 ranking

By claiming the recently concluded Twenty20 series against Ireland, Bangladesh surpassed top teams like Pakistan, Australia, New Zealand and India in the ICC Twenty20 rankings.

The international minnows are up to No.4 on the ICC Twenty20 rankings, after beating Ireland 3-0 on their tour of Europe.

England, South Africa and Sri Lanka hold the top three spots in the shortened format of the game.

The ranking belies their captain's pre-tour assessment.

Federer and Azarenka return to No. 1 in rankings

The recent Wimbledon results have re-shuffled the ATP / WTA ranking structure, though marginally.

The 2012 Wimbledon Title winner Swiss Roger Federer who had been sidelined by Djokovic and Nadal at no.3 place, moves up two slots to be the reining No.1 once again - a ranking he held from 2004-2008. Federer beat Djokovic in the semi finals and British Andy Murray in the finals. Nadal was ousted in the second round from the tournament.

Novak Djokovic and Nadal slip one slot down each to be the new world no. 2 and 3, while Andy Murray remains at no.4.

Victoria Azarenka [with her French Open 2012 trophy] regains her WTA no.1 ranking

In the WTA Ranking, Victoria Azarenka moves back to her no.1 ranking, which was temporarily held by Russian Maria Sharapova after she when the French Open Grand Slam earlier this year. 

Sharapova now moves down two slots to be the world no.3, while Polish Agnieszka Radwanska moves from no.3 position to no.2. Serena Williams after her 5th win of the Wimbledon Ladies' Singles title moves up two notches from no. 6to no.4. Czech Petra Kvitova, the unsuccessful defending champion moves to no. 6 from no.4. Australian Samantha Stosur remains firm on her no. 5th ranking.

Chanderpaul replaced by Sangakkara as world's top batsman

Sri Lankan Kumar Sangakkara has knocked veteran West Indies left-hander Shiv Chanderpaul off the top of the International Cricket Council's Test batting rankings.

In the latest rankings released on Thursday, Sangakkara had crept ahead of Chanderpaul to move to 892 ratings points.

Chanderpaul is 36 points adrift in second, with South African AB de Villiers in third on 821 points.

Pakistan, SL look to improve ODI rankings

Pakistan can jump from sixth to fifth spot in the ICC One-day rankings if they beat Sri Lanka 4-1 in the ODI series which gets underway in Kandy from Thursday (tomorrow).

According to a media release issued by the ICC on Tuesday, if Pakistan win the series 4-1 or better, then they will move ahead of Sri Lanka into fifth position. In case of Pakistan’s 4-1 series win, both sides will be on 108 ratings points but Pakistan will be ranked above Sri Lanka when the ratings are calculated beyond the decimal point.

Pakistan can even move to fourth if they win all five matches of the series against Sri Lanka and the West Indies wins their series against England.

England dominate ICC Twenty20I Rankings

Current ICC World Twenty20 champions England have continued their domination of the ICC Twenty20 International (T20I) Rankings after winning their series against Pakistan by 2-1 in Abu Dhabi on Monday. 

While England successfully retained their number-one position, which they could have lost had Pakistan won all the three games, Kevin Pietersen has replaced team-mate Eoin Morgan as the number-one batsman and Graeme Swann has taken over the coveted number-one bowling spot from Ajantha Mendis of Sri Lanka.
