Afridi's seven sixes save match for Pakistan

Pakistan that won the match against India, thanks to fiery sixes and fours of Shahid Afridi at the Asia Cup in Bangladesh, was up against Bangladesh with heavy odds yesterday.

Bangladesh scored an impressive 326 gave a very target of 327 to Pakistan to win. Banagladesh's Anamul Haque scored a century while three others made half centuries. And Pakistan found it really difficult to achieve it. In fact Pakistan has never chased a target of 327 in its history - which made Pakistan's victory very sceptic

When Pakistan came to bat, its top order line except for Shehzad's 103 crumbled and a stage came when it almost looked impossible for Pakistan to win. The local crowd was ecstatic for a win and were roaring and shouting with joy. Each wicket that fell brought the crowd to yell and wait for the victory - till Shahid Afridi came.

Shahid Afridi was the man who won the match for Pakistan against India and it was he who could save the match for Pakistan. And he sure did. In just 25 balls, he scored an impressive 59 with SEVEN mighty sixes and two fours. At one point he was dropped none other than by the Bangladeshi captain and the crowd really lamented and some girls were seen crying.

Afridi, who had his muscle pulled in his fiery performance, could not run in making a single and was run out. The crowd became mad with joy and it looked as if the hosts will win. 

Then Fawad who had played a consistent match also succumbed to the hosts for an impressive 74 - when Pakistan needed just two more runs with two balls remaining. It was Umer Akmal who finally hit a four to win the match for Pakistan. Suddenly the entire crowd went in a silence for they were just waiting for a big roar but could not.

The tigers were tamed right inside their home by the visitors. Afridi won the coveted man of the match award - he really deserved it. Defending champion Pakistan now plays final of the Asia Cup against Sri Lanka.

Afridi’s sixes bring victory for Pakistan over India in the 6th Match of Asia Cup Cricket

Those who watched the cricket match between India and Pakistan live from Mirpur – Dhaka, Bangladesh would remember it for a long time to come.

The hair-raising finish of the match reminded many of the Sharjah Cup final match when there was one ball remaining and four runs to make for Pakistan to win – and it was a mighty six from Javed Miandad that won the match for Pakistan and Javed Miandad is till remembered for winning the match for Pakistan.

Winning the toss, Pakistan invited India to bat. India in their stipulated 50 overs scored 245 at the loss of eight wickets and gave a target of 246 for Pakistan to win.  India’s Sharma,  Rayudu and Jadeja scored half centuries while Pakistan’s Saeed Ajmal bagged three wickets for 40. Talha who made a maiden début in the ODIs for Pakistan took two wickets and so did Hafeez.

Coming to bat, Pakistan’s Sharjeel and Shehzad opened confidently but at 71 Sharjeel was gone for 25. Thereafter Misbah was run out for one and Maqsood was the 6^th man to pack up for 38. At this stage Pakistan was at a precarious situation as one after the other Pakistan’s wickets kept falling, leaving Afridi and Junaid on the crease with no more wickets in hand.  Ajmal was the last man out when the total was 236 and Pakistan still needed 10 more runs to win the match.

And it was here that Shahid Afridi came to the rescue of his team  and hit a six and then Pakistan needed three more runs and three balls remaining. It was here that Afridi scored a mighty six off Aswin’s ball and won the match for Pakistan – just like Miandad did.  The entire Pakistan team ran into the ground and hugged Afridi for his superb 38 off 18 balls (not out), which included three sixes.

Hafeez declared man of the match for his impressive 75 runs and two wickets.

Commenting on his performance, Afridi said:

Really under pressure, didn't perform well. Hit some bad shots. "Expectations were high. We all know how importat this game was and I am glad I did it. The captain told me to take my time and I did that. Whenever we play against India it's a great occasion and I'm very happy. Gul was talking a lot with me, we wanted singles as well and we needed a hit as well. When we arrived here, our goal was to win this competition. Very important for my country and team and I want to thank Bangladeshi crowd for supporting us"

Pakistan now plays Bangladesh on Tuesday.

Bangladesh beat West Indies by seven wickets in first ODI at Khulna

As many had predicted that the hosts would be more comfortable taking on the visitors in the ODIs than the test matches they lost, the prediction came out to be true. In the first ODI, the hosts beat West Indies by a big margin of seven wickets at the Sheikh Abu Naser Stadium in Khulna on Friday.

Batting first the visitors were all out for 199 in 46.5 overs. Ghazi took four wickets for 29 while Razzak took three wickets for 39 runs.Gayle(35), Bravo(35) and Narine(36) were the only three batsmen who crossed 30s.

Responding to the challenge, the home team reached the target in just 40.2 overs and scored 201 for the loss of three wickets. Tamim scored 58 and Islam was 50 still on the crease when the target was reached. Narine, Sammy and Russel took one wicket each.

Pakistan tames the Bengal Tigers - Qualifies for the Super Eights

Pakistan Tuesday evening today beat Bangladesh in the Group D match by eight wickets with eight balls remaining and qualified for the Super Eights of the ongoing ICC T20I World Cup 2012 at Kendy, Sri Lanka.

Bangladesh batting first gave a target of 177 for Pakistan to chase. From Pakistan's side Yasir Arafat took three wickets, while Shahid Afridi and Sohail Tanvir took one each. Shakib ul Hassan was the top scorer with 84 runs in 54 balls, ousted by Yasir Arafat.

Even if Pakistan had lost to the Bengal Tigers by any score lesser than 36, it would still qualified for the Super Eights. But Pakistan played with its cools and moved confidently to reach the target with much ease.

Pakistan's opener Imran Nazir played magnificently and scored an impressive 72 - paving the way for Pakistan's victory. He made 72 in 36 balls. He was also declared player of the match.

The Super Eights matches will start from 27 September and will continue till October 2. Pakistan take its place alongside India, Australia and South Africa in Colombo.

Bangladesh improves T20 ranking

By claiming the recently concluded Twenty20 series against Ireland, Bangladesh surpassed top teams like Pakistan, Australia, New Zealand and India in the ICC Twenty20 rankings.

The international minnows are up to No.4 on the ICC Twenty20 rankings, after beating Ireland 3-0 on their tour of Europe.

England, South Africa and Sri Lanka hold the top three spots in the shortened format of the game.

The ranking belies their captain's pre-tour assessment.

Zimbabwe clinch the Tri-Nation T20 series title

What else Zimbabwe could have asked for when they beat South Africa in the tri-nations (Bangladesh, South Africa, Zimbabwe) T20 final and won the title, to utter dismay of the South Africans.

South Africa made 6-146 off 20 overs with Faf du Plessis (66). But when it came for the Zimbabwe to chase the paltry target, the South Africans were simple stunned as Zimbabwe reached 1-150 with 17 balls to spare. The win for Zimbabwe is largely attributed to an impressive unbeaten partnership between captain Brendan Taylor (59) and Hamilton Masakadza (58) - both players were at crease when the victory came.

It may be added that Zimbabwe beat the Proteas by 29 runs last Wednesday in the pool phase of a tournament that included Bangladesh, but lost by six wickets to South Africa on Saturday and entered the final as outsiders.

Bangladesh to tour Pakistan in end April

International cricket is set to return to Pakistan after three years, with Bangladesh formally confirming to the PCB that they will play one ODI and one Twenty20 International there later this month. There has been no cricket between two Full Member nations in Pakistan since the attack on the Sri Lanka team in March 2009.

The ODI is scheduled for April 29 and the T20I for April 30. Both matches will be played at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore.

Sunday's announcement follows lengthy negotiations between the two boards over the terms of the tour, and the strings attached to it. At times it looked as though the tour would be a non-starter but on Sunday it was welcomed by both sides.

ICC rejects claim Bangladesh was deprived of 5 penalty runs in 2-run loss in Asia Cup final

The International Cricket Council has rejected Bangladesh's claim that it was deprived of five penalty runs in its two-run loss to Pakistan in the Asia Cup final last week.

Bangladesh Cricket Board claims Pakistan bowler Aizaz Cheema deliberately blocked batsman Mahmudullah when he attempted a second run on the first ball of the 50th over.

Australian umpire Steve Davis failed to signal for any penalty runs and play resumed after he had talked with Cheema.

An ICC spokesman says the "umpire's decision is final and it cannot be changed."

In what could be termed as a classic finish the roaring Bengal Tigers were tamed by the Green Shirts and won their second Asia Cup cricket tournament by defeating Bangladesh. Bangladesh had to make four runs on the last ball - but could only make 1 leg bye.

Pakistan expects a "tough" final match against Bangladesh

Senior Pakistan batsman Younis Khan paid respect to Bangladesh for its gutsy performances and expected a hard-fought final.

Khan says Bangladesh's teamwork is "tremendous," and the team has demonstrated a "great strength" to chase any big total. He said that the Green Shirts contemplate a tough final match against the Bengal Tigers Thursday.

On the other hand, Bangladesh skipper  Mushfiqur Rahim is confident he can lead Bangladesh to an historic victory when it plays in its first Asia Cup final against Pakistan at Mirpur Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium on Thursday.

Rahim says, "We are now so close and do not want to lose the chance."

Bangladesh beat both World Cup finalists, champion India and Sri Lanka, to reach the final, and lost to Pakistan by 21 runs in the round-robin.

Asia Cup Final 22 March: Bangladesh vs Pakistan - Watch Free Live Streaming

The ongoing Asia Cup cricket tournament in Bangladesh has been amazing. It started off with India as the hot favourite, followed by either Pakistan or Sri Lanka reaching the final to take on the defending champions. No one talked of the hosts Bangladesh.

But to everyone's surprise, the Bengal Tigers stunned and surprised everyone. All speculations were turned wrong by the superb cricket shown by the hosts - from the underdogs, the became the roaring tigers to face Pakistan in the final of the Asia Cup 2012 being played on 22 March Thursday.

And what is more surprising that the hosts won over majestically not over the defending champion India, but also the Sri Lanka who have been the cup holder in the past. Their margin of 5-wickets victory over Sri Lanka was tremendous.  For the hosts the march into the final is history making, for which the entire country is jubilant, fully charged to support their team when they enter the Shere Bangla stadium to meet Pakistan. It may be added here that Pakistan, in its first opening match with the hosts, could barely win over by a narrow margin of 21 runs. This shows the form and excellent training with which the hosts have entered into the tournament.

The ouster of the defending champion and four times winner Sri Lanka must be shocking for both the countries. Sri Lanka this time could not win even a single match, while India paid the price of losing to the hosts.

Although, the Green Shirts are favourite for the final, they have had their problems in playing the limited over matches with England recently. Having won over the test series 3-0, the lost all ODIs and the T20Is to England. Even in the on going Asia Cup, their bowlers have not shown the shine as many were contemplating to witness. In Pakistan's match with India, the usual spirit was evidently seen lacking, which led to the defeat of the Green Shirts at the hands of the defending champions.

Now it is the final on Thursday - a big day indeed for both the teams, but specially for the hosts as they play for the final for the first time since the tournament started.

But despite all odds, they still are the favourites. Bangladesh on the other hand is in high spirits after winning over the Lankans and have the great support of their home crowd which will be much more charged and supportive of their team.

Asia Cup 2012: Bangladesh wins 6th ODI to Play Final against Pakistan

In what is called a dramatic finish, Bangladesh beat Sri Lank by 5 wickets to qualify for the final of the Asia Cup cricket tournament. Bangladesh now plays Pakistan, which has already qualified for the final, on 22 March 2012.


Sri Lanka batting first was restricted to a reduced target of 212 due to a mid-innings downpour  and Bangladesh was given the target to chase in reduced 40 overs.


And playing superbly, the hosts achieved the target with 17 balls remaining of 40 overs and won over Sri Lanka with five wickets remaining. The Bangladesh prime minister who was witnessing the match was overjoyed just like the who crowd at Shere Bangla stadium. Bangladesh played both the 2011 finalists and what many say came very close beating the former ODI champion Pakistan.

For Bangladesh, it is a great day as they were not hot favourites for the final and everyone expected India an easy sail in after Sri Lanka beat the hosts. But Bangladesh played smarter than the Lankans and qualified for the final. In what could be the biggest surprise of the century, Bangladesh posted a five-wicket victory over the hot favourite India in the Asia Cup one-day tournament in Dhaka Friday, despite Sachin Tendulkar's 100th international century.

The home side achieved the stiff 290-run target with four balls to spare in the day-night match to keep their hopes of reaching the final alive.

Tamim Iqbal (70), Nasir Hossain (54), Jahurul Islam (53), Shakib Al Hassan (49) and skipper Mushfiqur Rahim (46 not out) were Bangladesh's batting stars, while Indian paceman Praveen Kumar took three wickets.

Pakistan have two wins in as many matches, while India and Bangladesh have one victory each after two games. Sri Lanka have lost both of their matches.
