Britain's Christopher Froome won the 100th edition of the Tour de France cycle race Sunday 21 July yesterday at Paris, France.

28 years old Froome reached the final stage of the Tour by a margin of four minutes 20 seconds from Colombia's Nairo Quintana. Froome was all tears for his significance achievement.

Froome's success means Britain has now produced two successive Tour de France winners after Sky team-mate Bradley Wiggins last year became the first Briton to win the prestigious event.

Six-time Olympic champion Chris Hoy also hailed Chris Froome's Tour de France triumph as a monumental achievement for Britain.

Armstrong says sorry for taking performance-enhancing drugs

Admitting one's faults and crime is one thing, but publicly apologizing and saying sorry is just another - and perhaps noble.

This is exactly what Lance Armstrong, the seven time Tour de France winner, who was later stripped of his honours for taking energy intensifying banned drugs, finally did in an interview with American chat show queen Oprah Winfrey.

However, after the interview while speaking to CBS this morning about the 'intense and emotional' interview that took place in Austin, Texas, Oprah said: 'He did not come clean in the manner I expected, I was surprised.'

-->

After years of bitter and forceful denials, he offered a simple 'I’m sorry' to friends and colleagues and then admitted he used performance-enhancing drugs during an extraordinary cycling career that included those seven Tour de France triumphs.

Armstrong is said to have spoken openly to Travis Tygart about doping, claiming it was rampant in all sports, especially NFL football, and that he was being singled out for punishment.

'Ex Cyclist' Lance Armstrong sued by Sunday Times for £1million

When he was cycling, he was a hero.

Paying for his frauds: Ex Cyclist Lance Armstrong

Now that he has been stripped off of all the honours and awards, including the seven title, he is being pushed into courts for frauds he committed.

The latest is that Lance Armstrong is being sued by The Sunday Times for more than £1million after it lost a libel action to the disgraced cyclist for printing doping claims now known to be true.

It may be added that The Sunday Times paid Armstrong £300,000 in 2006 to settle a case after it reprinted claims from a book alleging that Armstrong had taken performance-enhancing drugs.When he was cycling, he was a hero.

He is expected to lose out on £30 million in sponsorship over next five years. The Sunday Times, owned by Rupert Murdoch's News Corp., said its total claim against Armstrong is 'likely to exceed' £1 million pounds

Armstrong stripped of titles - and banned for life

Lance Armstrong was stripped on Monday of his seven Tour de France titles and banned for life by the governing body of cycling following a report from the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency that has accused him of leading a massive doping programme on his teams.

Doping: Lance Armstrong stripped of titles and banned for life
International Cycling Union (UCI) president Pat McQuaid said the USADA’s report had been accepted and they would not appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport. “Lance Armstrong has no place in cycling and he deserves to be forgotten in cycling,” Mr. McQuaid said at a news conference. “This is a landmark day for cycling.”
-->
The decision clears the way for Tour de France organisers to officially remove Armstrong’s name from the record books, erasing his consecutive victories from 1999 to 2005.

Team GB fail to pick up a medal on the opening day

It was just one of a number of disapointments suffered by Team GB on a day when none of their medal hopefuls were able to secure a place on the podium.

As for tennis, it looked as if Murray brothers  were not playing for gold, but defeat still hurt for Andy and Jamie Murray as they lost on the grass of Wimbledon in the first round of the Olympic men's doubles.

In a very tight battle with Austria's Jurgen Melzer and Alexander Peya they went down 5-7, 7-6 (8/6), 7-5 after two hours and 23 minutes.

And then, much touted Mark Cavendish failed to challenge in the men's cycling road race and - along with teammates Bradley Wiggins, Chris Froome, David Millar and Ian Stannard - finished way out of contention.

Cycling result bursts Britain's bubble at Olympics

Britain’s glow from the glittering Olympic opening ceremony didn’t extend to the men’s cycling road race Saturday, where Mark Cavendish was expected to bring the host country its first gold medal of the London Games.

Cavendish finished 29th after his Great Britain team-mates failed to reel in a late breakaway in the 250km race that finished on The Mall.

Instead it was doping-tainted Alexander Vinokourov of Kazakhstan celebrating in the Mall outside Buckingham Palace after winning the 250-kilometer race in a closing sprint and leaving Cavendish well back in the pack.

“It’s just unbelievable,” said Vinokourov, who won Olympic silver in the road race at Sydney in 2000. “I finished the Tour de France a little tired, but the Olympics, I must go there.”

Wiggins blew away the field in Saturday's race against the clock in Stage 19, his second Tour victory this year in a time trial, his specialty.

"I really wanted to go out there and finish with a bang, and fortunately I was able to do that," said Wiggins, noting he realized the breadth of emotion when he spotted his mechanic in tears.
