South Africa wins first test against Pakistan by 211 runs

The visiting Pakistan team that was crippled for 49 in the first innings, did try to stick to their feet on the crease in their second innings, but Steyn was to hot to be handled by Pakistani batsmen. Steyn who took 6 for 8 in the first innings, collected five more wickets in the second innings for 52. In all he bagged 11 wickets for six in the first match to bring victory to South Africa by 211 runs.

Steyn took 11 wickets for 60 in the first test match against Pakistan at Johannesburg

South African wicket keeper Villiers was equally assertive who took five catches in the second innings in addition to six in the first, totaling 11 catches, just like 11 wickets of Steyn. Villiers equaled the previous world record held by Jack Russel for England against South Africa on the same Wanderers ground in 1995-96.

Pakistan which had a stockpile of spinners, found it hard to dismantle the South African batsmen as the wicket needed fast bowlers like Steyn to dislodge the batsmen. This was also acknowledged by Pakistan captain Misbah, who said that they needed a deal with the South African fast bowlers.

Pakistan plays its second test match against South Africa from 14-18 February at Cape Town.

Watch Live Sri Lanka v New Zealand Free Streaming | First Test Match: 17-21 November 2012

The visiting New Zealand team begins its first test match against the hosts Sri Lanka at the Galle International Stadium from 17 to 21 November.

The visitors had a tough time battling the weather and the Sri Lanka in the five ODIs they played and ended up in a 4-0 series loss (one of the match was washed away by the rains). The monsoon that continues in November, the match is likely to be disturbed by the rains.

Having had a clean sweep in the ODIs, Sri Lanka will also like a 2-0 win. And if they win the toss, they would certainly like to bat first and try to give as big a target to the visitors that ensures a victory. So it will be batsmen, followed by the spinners that will do the magic for the hosts.

As for the visitors, they would be relying on their fast bowlers who will be assisted by the evening rains, that freshens up the pitch for the next morning. If the hosts are batting first, the evening rains may help the visitors - but remember the hosts are playing on home wickets, very well known to them. And weather - they are born in rains and they will enjoy playing before and after the rains smilingly.

The opposing squads are as under:
Sri Lanka
DPMD Jayawardene*, AD Mathews, LD Chandimal, RMS Eranga, HMRKB Herath, HAPW Jayawardene†, S Randiv, FDM Karunaratne, PHT Kaushal, KMDN Kulasekara, NT Paranavitana, KTGD Prasad, TT Samaraweera, KC Sangakkara, UWMBCA Welegedara

New Zealand
LRPL Taylor*, TD Astle, TA Boult, DAJ Bracewell, DR Flynn, JEC Franklin, MJ Guptill, BB McCullum, CS Martin, RJ Nicol, JS Patel, TG Southee, CFK van Wyk†, N Wagner, KS Williamson

The match is scheduled from Saturday 17 November to 21 November and will start each day 04:30 GMT  at the Galle International Stadium.

England take a dismal start after India's 521/8 Declared

The visiting English team found itself at a loss when it failed to stop the Indians mounting tons of runs in the first test being played at Ahmadabad from 15-19 November 2012.

Indian batsmen really took a heavy toll of the English bowlers and hit every delivery with ferocity and super power. Pujara was the highest scorer who hit 206 and remained not out till the match was declared at at 521. Other batsmen who added to his effort to take the score to over 500 were Sehwag 117, Yuvraj 74.

Although Swann took five wickets, but they did not come cheaply  and Swann really had to work it out to curtail the Indian runs, but the wickets cost him 144 runs.

And when it came to the visitors, their performance was far from perfection and could be termed as utterly dismal when they lost three wickets till stumps.Except for the new English captain Cook who was still holding on at 22, Compton, Anderson (the nightwatchman) and Pieterson were back to the pavillion for scoring peanuts. Aswin claiming two of the three fallen wickets for 21, restricted the Brits for 41 for three for the day in the 18 over played.

Saturday tomorrow is Day-3 and a difficult day ahead for the visitors. Would they be able to take stock of their dismal start and surprise Indians? I very much doubt.

India vs England: Watch Free Live Streaming | First Cricket Test Match - 15-19 November 2012

England arrives in India to play cricket and the first test match begins from Thursday, 15 November today at Ahmadabad for five days till 19 November.

The England-India cricket spell is a long one this time as both teams will play four test matches, two T20Is and five ODIs. The The English trip will go on spilling over the next year till 27 January  This means the English squad will be enjoying their Christmas and the New Year in India, though they may go back to England as there is a break from the lst T20I on 22 December to first ODI at 11th January.

The first test match will be played at Sardar Patel Stadium, Motera, Ahmedabad from 15  - 19 November 2012 (5-day match).

This time, the Indian captain Dhoni is banking on the slow bowlers to exploit England's weakness against spin on bouncing and turning Indian wickets. And one of the spinners to watch for is Ravichandran Ashwin - for whom Dhoni remarked, "India do not boast a mystery spinner like Pakistan's Saeed Ajmal but off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin's variations make him quite a handful." This reliance will make England shiver and remind them of their utter defeat in the Test matches against Pakistan and South Africa.

However, the new England captain Alastair Cook insists the pressure is on India ahead of the start of the four-Test series - though England have not won a Test series in India since 1984-85. Let us see how the new English skipper comes up with something hiding up in his sleeve to avoid a test-match debacle and surprise the hosts.

Strauss backs England to recover

England Captain Andrew Strauss says his squad can draw on recent success to recover from their innings defeat by South Africa.

Series wins over Australia, home and away, India and West Indies helped England top the world rankings. But their position is under threat from South Africa, who outplayed them in the first Test at The Kia Oval.

"Our attack has taken 20 wickets in almost every game during the last two years and one game shouldn't dent their confidence too much," said Strauss.

Hashim Amla hits career best 311 [not out]

Hashim Amla, who was undefeated on a South African-record 311 when he was told to stop, offered some insight into the captain's decision. "We saw the wicket is good to bat on and we'd rather have a lot of time to bowl and chase whatever we have to than bat on for 10 or 15 overs that we may need later on," Amla said, indicating that South Africa have prepared to bat again if needs be. "You'd rather be in our change-room without a doubt."
Despite the unresponsive surface, Amla believes there is something in it for South Africa's attack, particularly Imran Tahir who already has the scalp of Andrew Strauss. "There's quite a bit of rough. Even though they don't have many left-handers to come, the rough is always a danger for the left-handers so maybe Imran can get a bit there," he said.

Pakistan vs Sri Lanka: First Test Free Live Streaming 22-26 June

Misbah-less Pakistan plays its first test match against hosts Sri Lanka from Friday 22 June to 26 June at Galle, Sri Lanka.

Pakistan has shown a far from satisfactory erformance in the four ODIs it played against Sri Lanka and let the hosts win it 3-1. Had the rain not washed away the fourth ODI, the result may have been 4-1 in favour of Sri Lanka too.

As for Pakistan's Misbah, who has been suspended by ICC for "serious over-rate offence" in the 5th ODI, names of Faisal and Ayub are being taken as Misbah's replacement. Pakistan were found to be three overs short of their target even after time allowances were taken into consideration.

As reported by Cricinfo, the suspension will cost Misbah the chance to break the Pakistan record for most consecutive Tests as captain. Misbah was on 15 Tests, with nine wins, five draws and one defeat. Abdul Hafeez Kardar was captain for 23 matches in a row, while Imran Khan and Waqar Younis had led Pakistan in 16 consecutive Tests.

Besides, allrounder Jeevan Mendis, who is yet to earn a Test cap, has also been picked. Angelo Mathews has been named vice-captain, replacing Thilan Samaraweera .

England homing on victory at Lord's

England are closing in on victory in the first Test at Lord's after reducing West Indies to 120-4 - still 35 in arrears - with two days to go.
Only Shivnarine Chanderpaul, with a typically dogged unbeaten 34 from 95 balls, and Marlon Samuels (26 not out) offered sustained resistance on a pitch that has flattened out the longer the game has gone on.
The obstinate Chanderpaul survived a brace of early edges and a late referral for lbw to frustrate England but, with time on their side and the West Indies tail weak, a home win remains the most likely outcome.
Stuart Broad, Tim Bresnan and Graeme Swann took a wicket apiece on a day that began with a flurry of wickets and runs before fizzling out into a battle of attrition.
England added a further 139 to their overnight 259 to open up a first-innings lead of 155, thanks in part to Ian Bell's patient 60.
