World Cup Update: Belgium and Argentina join the Round of 8 Group

The last two slots of the Round of 8 have finally been filled by Belgium and Argentina yesterday.

The match between Belgium and USA remained goalless till the full time. However in the extra time, Belgium struck twice in the 93rd and 105th to put the Americans under pressure. Although the Americans made alst minute effort and succeeded to have a lone goal in 107th minute, they could do no more to prevent the Belgians carrying the day and let them enter in the last eight teams.

The second match between Argentina and Switzerland was almost the same as the match between Belgium and USA. There was no goal till the full time. The lone goal came from Di MarĂa in the 118th minute – securing a place for Argentina in the Round of 8.

Czech pair defeat Swiss pair in longest match of Davis Cup history

When the defending champion pair Tomas Berdych and Lukas Rosol entered the court to play against their Swiss opponents Stanislas Wawrinka and Marco Chiudinelli in the double rubber, they did not know that they were into a history making match.

The match began with a hide and seek of winning and losing alternate games but the final set prolonged to 24-22 and it took Czech pair SEVEN hours and two minutes to finally win the match 6-4, 7-6, 6-4, 6-7, 24-22.

It seemed both pairs were not giving in as match continued till a double fault by the Swiss pair ended the game in favour of the Czechs.

The previous match record was six hours and 22 minutes. That was held by American John McEnroe's 9-7 6-2 15-17 3-6 8-6 win over Sweden's Mats Wilander in 1982 before tie-breaks were contested.

Berdych and Rosol's doubles victory is now the second longest match ever behind American John Isner's 6-4 3-6 6-7 7-6 70-68 win against Frenchman Nicolas Mahut in the first round of Wimbledon in 2010. That match was played over three days and the pair spent 11 hours and five minutes on court.

And today's draws are going to be real fun as someone said that 'When the runners-up pool looks as strong as the winners pool, the UEFA Champions League draw gets fun.'

Some of Europe's biggest historical powers and best up-and coming sides finished second in their UEFA Champions League groups, setting up a fascinating draw on Thursday. No matter who they draw, Arsenal, AC Milan, Shakhtar Donetsk and FC Porto should offer up stiff opposition in the round of 16. Real Madrid, despite their recent struggles, might be favorites in a heavyweight clash against a side like Bayern Munich or Manchester United.

Herein under are the group winners, and who they can play:

Malaga (Arsenal, Shakhtar Donetsk, Celtic, Galatasaray)
Schalke 04 (Porto, AC Milan, Shakhtar Donetsk, Galatasary, Valencia, Celtic, Real Madrid)
Juventus (Porto, Real Madrid, Arsenal, Valencia, Celtic, Galatasaray)
Borussia Dortmund (Porto, Arsenal, AC Milan, Shakhtar Donetsk, Valencia, Celtic, Galatasaray)
Paris Saint-Germain (Arsenal, AC Milan, Real Madrid, Shakhtar Donetsk, Valencia, Celtic, Galatasaray)
FC Barcelona (Porto, Shakhtar Donetsk, Arsenal, Galatasaray, AC Milan)
Manchester United (Porto, AC Milan, Real Madrid, Shakhtar Donetsk, Valencia, Celtic)
Bayern Munich (Porto, Arsenal, AC Milan, Real Madrid, Shakhtar Donetsk, Celtic, Galatasaray)

There is, surprisingly, no chance of a rematch from last year's Round of 16. AC Milan and Arsenal, who met in a classic tie, both made it through but both sit in the runners-up pool. Bayern Munich, Barcelona and Real Madrid are the only other teams who have made the knockout stage for a second consecutive season.

The draws are to take place at 10:30 GMT on Thursday, 20 December at Nyon, Switzerland.

Roger Federer vs Julien Benneteau Live Streaming Wimbledon Third Round 29 June

At Wimbledon or any sports event, the ranking or the standing hardly counts when it comes to the playing battlefield. Thursday's setback defeat of world no.2 Rafael Nadal at the hands of 100th ranked Czech Rosol is a very recent example. Therefore, high ranking players have tbe wary of lower ranking players, for they might struck much to the surprise and shock.

Friday today, after Djokovic's face off with Stepanek finishes at the Centre Court, Roger Federer will play his thrid round match against 32nd ranked French Julien Benneteau at the Centre Court.

World no.2 Swiss Federer has met Julien Benneteau thrice with a 2-1 winning edge. Julien Benneteau beat Federer at ATP France in 2009 in their last encounter 3-6 7-6(4) 6-4.

Julien Benneteau has won six of his last ten matches, last against M. Russell 7-6(4) 2-6 6-4 7-5 in the Wimbledon second round yesterday.

Federer, who is eyeing the Wimbledon title for the seventh time, should have taken a sigh of relief after Nadal's unceremonial ouster in the second round, and would be relaxed to move on to meet Djokovic in the fianl if all goes well.

The match between Federer and Julien Benneteau is scheduled for Friday, 29 June 2012 at 16:00 GMT on Centre Court.

[ via Asia One Sports ] 29 Dec

The first African football drama of 2012 will unfold in a Swiss boardroom as Namibia continue a battle to get Burkina Faso kicked out of the upcoming Cup of Nations.
Namibia claim Cameroon-born Herve Zengue was ineligible to play against them in qualifiers for the 2012 African showcase and want to replace Burkina Faso at the January 21-February 12 tournament in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea.

Having had two appeals rejected by African football governing body CAF, the Namibians have turned to the Switzerland-based Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) to reverse what official Barry Rukoro calls a "travesty of justice".
