Maria Toor from South Waziristan, Pakistan becomes first female Nash Cup champion

Maria Toorpakai Wazir hailing from South Waziristan, Pakistan, becomes the first female t bag the Nash Cup squash title.

Toor beat Milou van der Heijden of the Netherlands 13-11, 11-3, 11-9 to win the first ever women’s event in the Nash Cup in Canada.

This is Maria Toor's third title of her WSA career after she won the South-west Squash Open and the Liberty Bell Open last year in the US.

While in her nurturing years of squash, representing Warsak High School in Peshawar, Maria became the youngest ever winner of the National Women’s Squash Championship in Pakistan toppling top seed Muqaddas Ashraf of Punjab in straight sets in the final at Karachi Club squash court in 2004. She was 13 at the time.

It was this self belief and great form that finally brought her to the world stage, joining the WISPA in 2006. She was immediately at ease on the international circuit as well, reaching the semi-final stage of the 2nd WISPA International Women’s Squash Championship at the POF Jahangir Khan Complex in Islamabad.

Amir Atlas of Pakistan wins Asian Squash Title

Pakistan’s Aamir Atlas Khan beat Kuwait’s Abdullah Al Mezayan in three sets to become the first Pakistani to bring an end to the Asian title drought in 14 years to win the Asian Squash Championship on Sunday at the Islamabad Sport Complex.

Khan won over Al Mezayan after an impressive performance with figures of 11-9, 11-3, 11-8.

In the women’s final, Hong Kong’s Annie Au beat Malaysia’s Low Wee Wern 5-11, 11-8, 11-7, 11-1.

Pakistan beat India to win the 16th Asian Junior Team Championship in Seoul

Top seed Pakistan beat India 2-0 in the final to win the 16th Asian Junior Team Championship in Seoul on Sunday.

In the match for gold medal, Ali Bukhari beat Mahesh Mangoankar 11-5, 5-11, 9-11, 11-6, 11-7 and Bilal Zakir defeated Deepak Mishra 11-7, 11-6, 11-9, while the match between Ammad Fareed and Kush Kumar was withdrawn.

“This is very good news for us as we are now the Asian champions in both seniors and juniors categories. This win is quite amazing as we defeated India in the final,” said Secretary Pakistan Squash Federation (PSF) Abdul Wahab Marwat while talking to this scribe. “Now we are preparing our teams for the Asian Individual Championship that is to be held in May in Islamabad,” he added.

However, the girls’ team managed to secure fifth position by beating Korea 2-0. Samar Anjum thrashed Park Min Ju 11-9, 11-8, 11-9 and Riffat Khan trounced Eum Hwa Young 11-5, 11-5, 11-4, while the match between Sadia Gul and An Ye Jin was withdrawn.

Pakistan's Danish in World Junior squash semis

Pakistan’s Danish Atlas Khan reached the semifinal of WSF Junior Championships 2012 in Doha on Tuesday.

In the semifinal, Danish will face number one seed Marwan El Shorbagy of Egypt who beat Nasir Iqbal in the quarter-final.

The 3/4 seed Danish beat the 9/16 seed Ahmad Al-Sarraj of Jordan 11-6, 11-8, 11-5 in 30 minutes.

Danish maintained his successful run with his greater experience playing against Ahmad Al-Saraj, who was playing on glass court for the first time in a quarterfinal match.

Squash: Maria progresses at British Open

Maria Toor Pakay on Monday became the first Pakistani woman to qualify for the main rounds of the British Open currently progress at London’s famous O2 Arena.

Maria, who was born in South Waziristan but is now settled in Toronto, defeated England’s Emily Whitlock in an epic encounter in the final qualifying round to make the cut for the main draw.

The left-handed Maria took 46 minutes to oust Whitlock 11/5, 4/11, 8/11, 11/6, 11/7 to earn the right to feature in the main rounds of the prestigious tournament.

Maria is Pakistan’s best-ranked female player. She claimed that honour at just 16. In May 2008, she rose to number 66 in the international rankings — her career-best position to date. Currently she is ranked No 89 in the world. 

Last year, she moved to Canada where former world number one Jonathon Power took her under his wings. Since then Maria has shown substantial progress and is now working hard to make it to the top-25 world rankings.

Pakistan down India 2-0 in Asian Squash

Pakistan dismantles Indian squash team, men's event, 2-0 in the summit clash in the 16th Asian Team Squash Championship, in Kuwait on Saturday.

Pakistan team, which was already missing its top seed, Amir Atlas Khan, took on ‘offence as the best defence’ as a strategy to get past its opponents.

India's national champion Saurav Ghosal squandered a 2-0 advantage and went down in five games to Pakistan's number one Farhan Mehboob in the first singles.

The script did not change in the second singles as Siddharth Suchde lost to Farhan Zaman in five games.

The India's men's team equalled its silver-winning performance in the team championship in the inaugural edition of the tournament held in 1981 in Karachi.
