World No.1 Azarenka beaten by Serena Williams - WTA Istanbul

What many thought to be expected, world no.1 Victoria Azarenka was taken aback by US Open and Wimbledon Champion world no. 3 American Serena Williams 6-4, 6-4. Thus Azarenka failed to avenge her defeat at the hands of Williams at the US Open finally this year.

Azarenka had just yesterday overcome a strong resistance from German Angelique Kerber and lost the first set 6(11) -7(13). But regained the match and beat the German winning the next two sets 7(7)-6(2), 6-4. And it was thought that she would not be a hot pie for Serena to eat easily. But Serena found it easy to beat Azarenka just like that.

In the first match fo the Day-3, 7th ranked Chinese Na Li beat 6th ranked German Angelique Kerber 6-4, 6-3. Na Li was earlier beaten by Serena Williams 7(7)-6(2), 6-3 on Day 2.

World no.3 American Serena Williams meets world no.6 left handed German Angelique Kerber in the second match TEB BNP Paribas WTA Championships - Istanbul, Tuesday afternoon.

Will it be a revenge match for Kerber?

How would Williams feel when facing Kerber, I do not know. But interestingly even after a gold win  gold at Olympics, of the last ten matches played, Serena lost only one match - and that too against Kerber at Cincinnati earlier this year. Kerber beat Williams in straight 6-4, 6-4. 

Williams has played Kerber only twice and won her first encounter at US Open in 2007 against Kerber in the first round beating her 6-3, 7-5, losing her second match at Cincinnati as mentioned above.

But that was then - now Williams  though seven years older to the German is in good form with many laurels this year.

Kerber on the other hand has lost three of her last ten matches. She retired against Sharapova in Beijing lately when one set and three games down in the second.

Federer demolishes Djokovic to win fifth Cincinnati Masters title in straight sets

Roger Federer bounced back from his Olympic final defeat in sensational style by comfortably seeing off Novak Djokovic to win the Western & Southern Open title.

The world number one was beaten in straight sets by Andy Murray on the Wimbledon grass at London 2012, with the Scot avenging his loss in the final at SW19 to the Swiss four weeks earlier.

Djokovic, who earned quick revenge for his Olympic defeat to Juan Martin del Potro with a 6-3 6-2 success yesterday, could not recover and Federer broke twice more to surprisingly wrap up the opening set in convincing fashion after just 20 minutes.

In the WTA Cincinnati finals, Chinese La Ni beat German Angelique Kerber to win the women single title, 1-6, 6-3, 6-1.

Venus crashes out of Olympics Tennis

Well upsets do occur and this time it was American Venus Williams to succumb to the upsets.

In her third round match against German Angelique Kerber, Venus could not over power her opponent and crashed out of the Olympic medal race 6-7, 6-7.

Venus, who won a gold in Sydney Olympics 2000, was all set to move forward and win a medal of any sorts.

Venus' crashing out now places onus on the younger Williams, Serna to carry on and win the gold for America. Serena is in her superb form after her fifth Wimbledon title recently. She crusies forward by winning over the 2008 silver medal winner Vera Zvonareva 6-1, 6-0.

As for other ladies, world no.3 and former world no.1 until recently when she crashed out of the Wimbledon Russian Maria Sharapova, the Russian flag bearer in Olympics this year, faces former world number one Kim Clijsters in the quarter finals.  Clijsters beat Serbia's Ana Ivanovic 6-3, 6-4.

Sharapova's oppnent Kerber upset fourth-seeded Czech Petra Kvitova 7-6 (7-2) 1-6 6-1, friday.

Kvitova has met the German only once at Stuttgart earlier this year when she beat Kerber 6-4, 6-1.

In the last ten matches played by both, Kerber lost two matches, while Kvitova lost three. Incidently, Kerber's all last ten matches were played on clay, which conditions her for Rome to take on the world no.4.
