Rafael Nadal vs Gael Monfils: Australian Open Third Round | Watch Free Live Streaming - 18 January 2014

The Australian Open, the first Grand Slam of the year 2014, is well on its way to round three. Almost all top seeded players are progressing well and are wither in round three or have qualified for the round four.

In series of round three matches, Saturday today, Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray, Roger Federer, Victoria Azarenka and Maria Sharapova are all on show at Melbourne Park.

World no.1 Rafael Nadal faces 25th seeded Frenchman Gael Monfils, whom he defeated in the final at the Qatar ExxonMobil Open earlier this month.

Monfils hasn't dropped a set in his opening two matches at the first grand slam of the year, as he eased past American pair Ryan Harrison and Jack Sock, and will be aiming to progress to the tournament's round of 16 for the first time since 2009.

For Mofils, playing against the 13-time major champion Nadal may not be an easy feat who has earlier beaten Australians Bernard Tomic and Thanasi Kokkinakis in first and second sets and is as aggressive as ever.

For Nadal, it is for the second time this year, that he faces France’s Gael Monfils, and this could be his biggest test so far.

The third round match between Rafael Nadal - Gael Monfils is scheduled for 18 January 2014 at Approximately 9:00 pm local (Melbourne),  11:00 am CET (Madrid),  10:00 am GMT (London), 5:00 am EST (New York) at Rod Laver Arena.

Brace yourself for Australian Open - the First Grand Slam of 2014

The defending champions: Novak Djokovic - Victoria Azarenka

Top tennis players and tennis fans from all around the world are arriving in Melbourne Australia to play and watch the first Grand Slam of the year 2014 - The Australian Open.

Held each year in January, the Australian Open sets the pace for the tennis activities for the rest of the year. This year, Rafael Nadal and Serena Williams are being dubbed as the hot  favourite.

The aspiring title candidates: Serena Williams - Rafael Nadal

Serena Williams have had a meaningful tennis year last year and is being considered by many as the 'hot' favourites not only for the Australian Open but the entire year 2014. Last year, the world number one won the French Open and the US Open. Despite her age  Williams at 32 does not seem to be lacking stamina and will to lose her way forward. She now seeks historic 18th Grand Slam win at Australian Open — an accomplishment that would match Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert.

As for her form and fitness, her coach Patrick Mouratoglou believes that Serena Williams can become the first woman since 1988 to win all four Grand Slam titles in the same year.

It may be added that Williams, 32, held all four Grand Slams simultaneously when she won the Australian Open of 2003, but Steffi Graf in 1988 was the last female player to lift all four titles in the same calendar year.

However, there are some who question Serena's firness and ask Will Serena Williams' reign end? - well time will tell as Australian Open reaches its final.

Summing up ladies title, top 10 contenders to win in Melbourne, including Serena Williams, Maria Sharapova and Victoria Azarenka - the defending champion, who is aiming for a hat-trick of Australian Open titles .

As for the men's singles, although Djokovic will try his best to defend his title he won last year, he has Rafael Nadal all set to threaten him and is hot contenderer for the title this year. Although Novak Djokovic hopes Becker can help him retain title - Rafael Nadal, who has recovered from her knee injury is robust and reslienet as ever to take on the Serb.

It’s hard to bet against Djokovic though as four of his six Grand Slam titles have come in Melbourne. The three-time defending champion has the Australian Open down to a science; he opted to limit his preparations to exhibition events once again this year, which guarantee him a few good matches, before spending the last two weeks fine-tuning his game and arriving early in Melbourne.

As per the draws, Nadal and Djokovic are in different groups and are not likely to face each other till the final. With questions surrounding 2013 finalist Andy Murray’s fitness and four-time champion Roger Federer’s form, Nadal seems to be the player threatening the Serb his last year's title.

So we keep our fingers crossed and start watching the mega tennis year opener from 13th January which will terminate on 26 January.

Nadal opens the Grand Slam facing Australian Bernard Tomic in the first round.

Serena and Nadal declared players of the year by French sports daily L’Equipe

Rafael Nadal of Spain and Serena Williams of USA have been declared as the players of the year by French sports daily L’Equipe.

Nadal has been selected for his come back after seven months away from the courts suffering from knee injury to win the French Open, US Open and five Masters series titles and then took over as world no. 1 spot relegating Novak Djokovic to no 2 position.

Ageing Serena Williams displayed the best of her career, winning her second French Open as well as the US Open to take her haul of Grand Slam titles to 17.

Although Nadal acknowledged the award with delight for the second time in his career, he said he would have personally voted for Formula One world champion Sebastian Vettel, who won the drivers' title for the fourth straight year.

L’Equipe chose Wimbledon winner Marion Bartoli as its sportswoman of the year with the men’s award going to basketball star Tony Parker, who led France to the European title.

Nadal is World Number One for 2013

Nadal is no.1 for year 2013 [Photo Getty Images]

World number one Rafael Nadal of Spain claimed his second victory at ATP World Tours Finals in London on Wednesday evening to maintain his status as world number for the current year.

Nadal needed two matches to win at London - which he did by beating David Ferrer and Stanislas Wawrinka.

Although, match agaionst Ferrer was peanuts, but Stanislas Wawrinka gave him the toughest battle yesterday and it was a neck to neck match which finally nadal won 7-6 (7-5) 7-6 (8-6) to secure a semi-final place and guarantee he cannot be overtaken by world number two Novak Djokovic.

It will be the third time Nadal - who called it "the perfect scenario" - has finished a year top of the rankings.

Having lost to Djokovic in the ATP Paris recently, Nadal need two wins in succession to maintain his number one title - which he now has.

So it was a good year for the Spaniard who came to London with a career-best record of 72 wins and six losses for the year, 10 tournament victories and Grand Slam titles at the French and US Opens that took his tally of majors to 13 - four behind all-time leader Roger Federer.

Let us see if he manages to win the Australian Open January 2014 to start his winning spree with a Grand Slam.

Djokovic wins China but loses the World to Nadal

So finally Rafael Nadal climbs to the top of the world after he lost the honour in 2011 as he played the China Open final against reining world no.1 Serbia Novak Djokovic Sunday.

It seemed Nadal was more interested in winning the world no.1 ranking rather than winning China. And the result of the final of China Open showed as he lost the final to Djokovic 6-3, 6-4. The win was the fourth consecutive win of Djokovic.

For Djokovic it was both achievement and a big loss. "I wanted to win against Nadal, who has been the best player so far in 2013. It's important for my confidence."

Though Nadal clinches the world no.1 ranking from Djokovic, he found it difficult to contain Djokovic from winning the China Open title for the fourth time. He said: "I couldn't see a way to stop him and he was too strong for me.

Rafael Nadal in last eight at China Open

US Open champion Spaniard Rafael Nadal beat Philipp Kohlschreiber at the China Open to move a notch closer to regain his world number one title once again.

Nadal will replace Novak Djokovic as number one if he reaches the final, or the Serb fails to win the title.

The 27-year-old Spaniard won 6-4 7-6 (7-3) to set up a quarter-final against Italy's Fabio Fognini in Beijing.

It may be recalled that Nadal beat Kohlschreiber on his way to victory at the US Open last month. But it was a hard win as the match lasted four sets in New York, and the German tested him once again at China's National Tennis Centre.

The match saw some of the most fantastic rallies between the two and a brilliant match peaked with an incredible 21-minute game at 1-1 in the decider, which saw Wawrinka  fight off five break points and both men pause at one point to take the applause of 23,000 spectators on Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Rafael Nadal wins Montreal Rogers Cup

It was a one sided final at Montreal Roger Cup last night as world no.4 Spaniard Rafael Nadal beat his Canadian opponent Milos Raonic 62 62.

This was Rafa's 25th ATP World Tour Masters 1000 crown.

This also dashed any hopes of the Canadian Raonic of ending a 55-year title drought at the country’s biggest tennis tournament.

It may be recalled that Robert Bedard of Sherbrooke, Que., was the last Canadian to win what was then called the Canadian Open in 1955. Coincidently  he was in attendance to see Nadal claim his third Rogers Cup, to go with wins in 2005 and 2008.

Nadal vs Raonic: Montreal Final | Watch Free Live Streaming - 11 August 2013

The Montreal Rogers Cup final finally gets going tonight between world no.4 Rafael Nadal and  11th ranked Canada’s Milos Raonic Sunday tonight.

Nadal moved on by taking a third-set tiebreaker over top-seed Novak Djokovic. He’s trying to win his third Rogers Cup title in his third appearance in the final. He also won in 2005 and 2008.

Raonic will try to win his first ATP Masters 1000 tournament today on home soil. Raonic advanced to his first Masters 1000 final yesterday with a three-set victory over fellow-Canadian Vasek Pospisil.

Like Andy Murray who broke 73 years long British drought of Wimbledon earlier this year, it is time for Raonic to beat the record held by last Canadian, Robert Bédard, who won the event in 1958.

As for the head to head status, both Nadal and Raonic have met three times, most recently at the Barcelona Open this year, with Nadal winning all three matches. Two of the victories have come on hard courts, and Raonic has never taken a set off Nadal.

The match is scheduled for August 11, 2013 at 21:00 GMT.

Nadal wins French Open for record eighth time

It did not take Nadal long to successfully defend his French Open title Sunday today when he confronted his fellow countryman David Ferrer in the 'All Spanish' final of the Roland Garros.

Nadal's straight three sets win - 6-3 6-2 6-3 over Ferrer was not only a record eighth French Open title, but also a befitting tribute to his dominance on clay.

His 59th match win also takes him past Roger Federer and Guillermo Vilas at Roland Garros, while his 12th major title moves him above Bjorn Borg and Rod Laver on the all-time list.

However, the final was marred by a brief protest high in the stands during the second set that was quickly followed by an intruder leaping onto the court while brandishing a flare - something that never happens in Grand Slam event's final.

Rafael Nadal and Serena Williams Capture Madrid

What a day it was at Madrid where the final of men and women singles were played Sunday today.

In the first final between world no.1 American Serena Williams and world no.2 Russian Maria Sharapova, the American showed no mercy for the Russian to win her 50th career singles title.

Serena, the defending champion, did not take long to beat Maria Sharapova 6-1, 6-4 in a little over one and a quarter hours to capture Madrid. Williams, 31, leads their head-to-head 13-2, with the 26-year-old Russian not having beaten Williams since 2004.

With today's win, Serena becomes only the 10th woman in history to reach the 50 singles tour title milestone.

In the second final, world no.5 Rafeal Nadal of Spainbeat Switzerland's Stanislas Wawrinka 6-2 6-4 to win the Madrid Open in men's singles category.

In the absence of Novak Djokovic and Murray who were knocked out unceremoniously, Nadal had a field day at every stage to move on without much of threat from others. The 11-time Grand Slam winner now has a 9-0 record against Wawrinka, beating him in an hour and 11 minutes.

The next major event and the second Grand Slam event of the year is the Roland Garros or the French Open that would soon see most of the stars trying to win over Paris - who do you think would be the conquerors of Paris this year?

Well as expected, world no.5 left handed Rafael Nadal meets defending champion world no.2 Swiss Roger Federer in the quarter final of Indian Wells Master tennis tournament on night 14-15 March tonight.

It will be their first meeting for 12 months, since Federer beat Nadal in straight sets in the semi-finals in Indian Wells.

"Today it was extremely close again. Okay, I should [have] maybe closed it out in the second set, but he did well to stay in it," Federer said. "At the end, I don't know what got me through. Maybe it's the experience or maybe I was a bit more calm in those moments. I'm not sure. Today I think I was a little lucky to come through it in the end."
