ATP Cincinnati Masters Final: Roger Federer vs Novak Djokovic | 19 August 2012

As I predicted Saturday, World no.1 and seven times Wimbledon title holder Swiss Roger Federer enters into a showdown with World No. 2 Serbian Novak Djokovic Sunday in the final of ATP Cincinnati Masters.

Federer beat his Swiss compatriot Stanislas Wawrinka 7-6 (7/4), 6-3. Federer's run to the final means he will stay atop the ATP rankings through the end of the US Open. Federer who has claimed an ATP-best five titles this season, seeks a sixth career Cincinnati crown. 

Djokovic advanced to the finals defeating Juan Martin Del Potro 6-3, 6-2. It may be added that Djokovic quit last year's final against Andy Murray with a shoulder problem.

Today's final is being termed as historic as both world nos 1 and 2 are coming face to face Sunday at the Western & Southern Open. The showdown of world nos 1and 2 is the first time in the Open Era (since 1968).

Murray wins Olympic Gold - Djokovic loses Bronze

Andy Murray made history for himself and Great Britain Sunday today as he beat seven times Wimbledon title holder world no.1 Roger Federer of Switzerland to win the Olympic gold for his country. It was also his first win in the Olympic final as well as on the Centre Court of the Wimbledon.

Right from the outset Murray seemed determined to win the gold and did not let the Swiss to take any advantage of him. Murray won 6-2, 6-1, 6-4.

He is the first British man to win the Olympic singles gold medal since Josiah Ritchie in 1908.

Andy Murray had never beaten Federer in a best-of-five-sets match and lost to him in the Wimbledon final. He shed tear when he lost Wimbledon Final - today, he wept in joy, while Federer hurriedly exited the arena to hide his wet eyes.

In the Bronze Medal match, Argentina's Juan Martin del Potro beat Serbian Novak Djokovic. Jean Julian del Potro who almost beat Federer in the semi final, before he gave in to the Swiss, did not show any hesitation to let the game slip today and won over the Serbian 7-5 6-4. The match lasted one hour and 48 minutes on Court One at Wimbledon.


The gold medal for the men's singles event of Olympics tennis goes to British Andy Murray, silver ot Swiss Roger Federer and bronze to Del Potro of Argentine.

Top seed David Ferrer, who advanced to the final of the UNICEF Open on Friday in ‘s-Hertogenbosch after finishing strong to defeat Frenchman Benoit Paire 7-6(5), 3-6, 6-1, faces German qualifier Philipp Petzschner, who defeated Belgium’s Xavier Malisse 7-5, 7-5 in the semis.

World No. 6 Ferrer is contesting his 30th tour-level final, and his second on grass. He won this ATP World Tour 250 title on his tournament debut in 2008 (d. Gicquel). He has a 3-1 record in finals this season, winning the hard-court title in Auckland and clay-court crowns in Buenos Aires and Acapulco.

The 28-year-old Petzschner is through to his third ATP World Tour singles final and first since finishing runner-up to Philipp Kohlschreiber on grass in Halle a year ago. 

The match is scheduled for Saturday, 23 June 2012 at 10:00 GMT

The Worst Sports Weekend in History

What, you were expecting tennis history? Turns out you'll have to wait at least another day—and who knows—maybe two.

At the French Open on Sunday, Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal battled to a near draw when a persistent drizzle turned into a heavier rain and postponed this already-historic final until Monday. Nadal won the first two sets 6-4, 6-3, but lost the third 6-2 and trailed by a break of serve at 2-1 when play was called for the night. Each player had won exactly 97 points when play was stopped.

For much of the day, Nadal seemed likely to win in straight sets. When Nadal broke serve for a 4-3 lead in the second, Djokovic smashed his racket into his bench, opening a hole in it and sending fragments of it flying onto the court. A game later, the rain picked up and the players were sent off. When they returned, Nadal broke serve again and won the first two games of the third set. Djokovic looked disgusted.

Djokovic vs Nadal final goes on to Monday

While everyone was watching for the match to finish into a history making event, rain delayed the excitement for another day.  Now the remaining match spills over to Monday. It will be the first French Open not to end on Sunday since 1973, when Ilie Nastase wrapped up his title on a Tuesday.

In fact the rain interpreted twice: First when Nadal was leading 6-4, 5-3 and then Nadal was leading 6-4 6-3 2-6 1-2* when the match referee called the players off court at 5:51pm (6:51pm local time).

So we wait for another day for the match to finish and see who makes history: Djokovic for winning all four Grand Slams or Nadal for winning Roland Garros final for the seventh time.

Watch History in Making Sunday 10 June at Roland Garros

Sunday 10th June, that is today, is going to be a history making day in the game of tennis at the men's single final of Roland Garros or popularly the French Open.

Today in the men's single final two great names in the world of tennis, world no.1 Serb Novak Djokovic and world no.3 and Roland Garros defending champion Spaniard Rafael Nadal meet and whoever wins, will go down in the history of tennis.

Legendary Bjorn Borg who won French Open title for six times

Rafael Nadal, the defending champion, has already won the Roland Garros men's single title for six time - equalling record of Bjorn Borg. If he wins today, he will become the first man ever in history of tennis and Roland Garros to have won the Roland Garros title for the seventh time.

Novak Djokovic, who already hold the Wimbledon, the US Open and Australian Open titles, is eyeing the Roland Garros silverware today to become only the thrid man in the histry of tennis to hold this honour.

Don Budge [L] and Rod Laver [R]: Two men in history have won all four Grand Slam titles

Last time someone had the record was 43 years ago in 1969 when Australian Rod laver had had all four titles with him. Before him, Don Budge won all four men's singles Majors in 1938.

So let us watch today Djokovic against Nadal and see who out of the two writes history.

Nadal conquers Rome

World No.3 defending champion Spaniard Rafael Nadal did not find much difficulty in subduing the world no.1 Serbian Novak Djokovic 7-5, 6-3 to conquer Rome Monday.

The match which was initially planned for Sunday was postponed and re-schedule for Monday due to heavy downpour on Sunday.

With the win today, Nadal hits a hatrick of conquering the ATP Rome Masters title for the third consecutive time. This is also Nadal's seventh win at Rome, as he had eariler on won four Rome titles in succession from 2005-2008.

In 2009, Swiss Roger Federer won the Rome title after beating Robin Söderling 6-1, 7-6, 6-4. Nadal again won the 2010 title beating Robin Söderling 6-4, 6-2, 6-4. Nadal then went on to win the 2011 title beating Roger Federer 7-5, 7-6, 5-7, 6-1.

Nadal now eyes the Roland Garros  or the French Open which commences 27 May onward and hope to win the Grand Slam.

ATP Rome: Men's Final Postponed till Monday Midday

The Rome Open final between Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic has been put back to Monday due to heavy rain in the Italian capital. 

Play between the Spaniard and the Serb is due to get underway at midday tomorrow. 

Djokovic is the current holder of the title after he beat Nadal in last year's final.

Sunday's Women's final between Maria Sharapova and Li Na featured a lengthy delay after rain set in. World number two Sharapova eventually went on to win the match in three sets.

Murray to test theories against Djokovic after 'strange week'

Miami is strange for Murray for he has had two walk over to reach the final Sunday evening against the defending champion and World Number One Noval Djokovic.

Murray admits he has had "a strange week", having not had to strike a ball in three of the six rounds following a bye in the first and the withdrawals of Milos Raonic and Nadal. Ivan Lendl, his coach, has been with him in Miami and Murray had been looking forward to putting some of their theories into practice against Nadal.

Thus, today Murray will have the chance to assess how his game stacks up against Djokovic, who has lost in the semi-finals of his last two tournaments. But the Australian Open champion has looked in good shape in Miami, winning all five of his matches with something to spare.
